What is /pol/'s stance on labor unions?

I don't have a stance. What are the basics that I should know about them?

It's a shame they're not more prevalent. Unions are the backbone of America

Shit and degeneracy vehicles. A tool of leftist politics. In a healthy society where people work together for the betterment of a nation there is no need for the sort of division labour unions forment.

Should be illegal.

They serve only to fill the coffers of the democrat party and extort businesses out of unrealistic salaries for highschool dropouts.

I would prefer my wage be dictated by my own ability, not whatever some closed-door meeting decides for everyone.

They suffer from the same problem modern feminism does.

Most of the important issues they had were won by them decades ago so now they're mostly fighting for ridiculous shit.

I have been with 2 labor unions. IAM when I built airplanes and UFCW when I worked at a dairy plant... They are only good for negotiating wages... Thats it. I now work at an oil refinery that has no union and have the best medical plan, 401k plan and pay that I've ever had in my life.

In the UK they are all affiliated with the labour party (funny that) but it has become toxic. They are essentially politicised to start screaming whenever the tories try to act. I'd suspect this is true of most unions today. Instead of simply workers rights they ascribe to all the trendy lefty causes. Which today is open borders, anti-austerity and generally cultural marxism.

I have to be part of the BMA to practice medicine. BMA used to be very centrist and apolitical but with the contracts coming in the BMA have let every leftist spaz hijack the movement and it's discrediting the BMA as a result.

Funny because doctors in general notoriously vote conservative and that won't change.

I dislike formalized unions. Unions in the sense that "our boss is a jackass lets organize against them" are great as they allow workers to utilize their power against their employer to make demands en mass. However organized unions are dangerous both to the corporation and the worker.

>>69894805
The only union I have ever worked under was powerless, ineffective, and only gave ground because the ground it did have served no one. A new contract was given every year and what benefits you got shrunk noticeably because all they did was ensure people did the same job for 30 years and get paid ridiculous amounts for it. They're like social security: in short lifespans that cost little to nothing to maintain since life or death situations were more common, they served the working man well, albeit with tactics I would call utilitarian at best. Now they just kill initiative and ingenuity in a world which technology has made infinitely better but unions and other lacerations on productivity still take credit because muh rich.

>/pol/ actually believe their own drivel

the US auto industry was killed by the same thing that killed countless others: Globalization. When foreign cars could be assembled in the states and sold for a competitive price, Demand for vehicles from American manufacturers dropped significantly.

The funny thing about it all was is that they helped open the door to this shit. the Auto manufacturers were the ones who pressed for the importation of foreign steel so that they could pick it up at a more competitive price. They were successful and the American steel industry suffered heavily, only for the Auto industry to suffer the very same fate within the very same decade; Another glorious chapter of Friedman economics. Still, seems like poetic justice that the Auto-manufacturers fell victim to the politics they had spurned others with. Live by the sword, Die by the sword
>>
>>69898633
Correct. Most become blunted when jaded and that is when degeneracy strikes. Not meme degeneracy, but a corruption of the mind that personal initiative is pointless and everything in life is circumstantial.
>>
>>69899130
And this is totally impossible to fix?
>>
>>69894805
I can agree with their opposition to 19th century industrial working conditions, but they're just an impediment to trade now. My great uncle actually got shaken down by a union goon squad in Massachusetts, they only stopped because his brother was in the union and pulled some strings. Modern unions are protection rackets for lazy people.
>>
>>69898853
The Keysian system here is so dated and broken that globalization simply proved it for what it is: non-competitive. In a command economy with so little on the neighborhood level, big things wreck small things like natural disasters here and the level of stability a complete soft-core corporate-facsist model the more literally social-democrat nations have looks and is more stable. Being a libertarian is suffering when people take this as a sign "progressivism" i.e. the inevitable growing and empowering of government in society, is correct when we should be ahead of the curve and take a feng shui attitude to economic growth.
>>69899213

>>
>>69894805
At this point, they're pretty shit. Union workers are frequently lazy and entitled like niggers. If you work in a union shop, you are legally required to join the union and have dues deducted from your paychecks, unless you're in a right-to-work state. Your dues are used to finance leftist agitation.

As an example, unions are generally pro-immigration despite this driving down wages. American unions are all for fucking Shillary.

Labor union are a good thing but like many other things in this world, they get complacent or corrupt.
Power corrupts

>>
>>69894805
I think that their originally good intentions were usurped. Lifetime pensions after only twenty years of work in some cases can lead to rapid increases in costs with an overall decrease in productivity. Constant raises that often outstrip the increase in cost of living also strain the pocketbook of private institutions.

But whatever; I can deal with that.

But FUCK public sector unions. They absolutely SHOULD NOT exist; they're fundamentally unionized against the taxpayers. The Post Office is a piece of shit organization that hasn't turned a profit in decades, and it's because they have nothing but pensions, pensions, pensions to pay out while competing organizations do the same job faster, cheaper, and more efficiently. The unions went and fucked up something that was necessary.
