At my comprehensive, immigrant children were given extra classes, received the most tuition in class, had money for special programs and extra tuition out of school, could go to volunteer run sessions and were graded preferentially. I've done a lot of post-secondary education, having wealthy parents let me drift through a few different colleges/universities before having to grow up. My experience is that women make up maybe 1/3 at most of any serious course, closer to 1/10th of things like non-intro programming or physics, but I still saw a ton of women walking around campus, and lecture halls full of women. They're all taking social sciences and arts and humanities that are basically impossible to fail if you aren't handicapped. That's why you still hear about how "we need to get more women into engineering/compsci/surgery." Even if they're graduating more, its with a bachelor of the arts and they end up serving coffee anyway.
Males are more likely to attempt a difficult path and fail, and will then do a 2 year diploma or move to a trade instead.
