Quite a bit actually. Britain itself is the artifical union of 3 different cultures. Briton, Saxon and Scottish.
UK is essentially greater England. Scotland, Ireland and Wales have all been anglicised by being in the union.
Perhaps for Scotland there was at least economic benefit in being in the Union. But now the Empire is gone many Scots don't see value in it. The failure of Scotland's colonial ventures was after all a major factor in the Act of Union.
Wales will always be reliant on England but that dosen't bar independence imo, it just means a currency and travel union between the two is essential.

Robert Munro was a renowned Scottish general who had been Gustavus Adolphus' right hand man in the Thirty Years War and was renowned throughout Europe, and yet somehow made tactical errors more glaring than that of a typical Total War player.
His opponent, Owen Roe O'Neill, had a reputation for avoiding pitched battles. So Munro decided to amass the largest force he could, his strategy being that if his army was big enough then O'Neill would never attack him.
He marched his men 15 miles
Without rest
To intercept an Irish force that he'd heard had been gathering at Benburb. Most of them were on the verge of collapse before the battle even started.
He, for some reason, let the Irish assume a position on a hilltop.
Then he crossed a river to attack them, further exhausting his men and making it harder to retreat.
Then, after wasting all his cannons' ammunition, his Ulster-Scots cavalry ran head-on into an Irish pike formation, where they were slaughtered.
Then he kept directing the two halves of his infantry backwards toward the river until they smashed into each other and in the ensuing confusion the entire first rank of both halves was completely annihilated by an Irish musket volley.
What was left of Munro's cavalry, who were largely inexperienced Ulster-Scots farmers, broke into a retreat, he himself followed, and left his infantry, who were mostly English veterans, to be cut to pieces by the Irish charge.
The defeat was so devastating it ended Munro's long and storied military career. He came out of hiding to support the Royalists in the English civil war and held out in Carrickfergus. He surrendered to George Monck without a fight, got locked in the Tower of London for five years, and then married a geriatric widow so he could live in her cottage, effectively cucking himself.

British Army was called in because the police force couldn't deal with the Nationalists and called for help, but quickly established themselves as enemies of the nationalists by looting their homes and enforcing curfews and shit on them. Troubles ended in 98 with the Good Friday Agreement, where the IRA got places in the government where they could actually affect things.
Red Hand of Ulster is one of the few symbols that crosses sectarian divides. It's originally an Irish symbol from the O'Neill clan back when they were fighting the English, but it was put on Northern Ireland's official flag and the Unionists adopted that as their own even when it was abolished.
