I worked with a lot of Japanese at a Japanese-owned company called Unipres here in the USA.
They are, almost without exception, hard-working and highly intelligent.
They will work things out with their economy. It's impossible to keep people like that down. They're a bit strange, yes, but they are an ancient society, which essentially places them above criticism for their little idiosyncracies.
