Liberal here refers to economic liberalism, which is the standard way to refer to liberalism outside the USA. This is in contrast to Labor which is to the left economically of Liberals.

A basic guide to Australian politics:
1 Fuck whoever is in power. They think they're better than you, that's unAustralian. It doesn't matter who, policy doesn't matter, the party doesn't matter. Fuck em. You should be cautious when airing this opinion outside of proper protocol, lest you be seen as unAustralian. Read: When the media says it's okay.
2 The media is king. Their word is final. This is AUSTRALIAN media and that means they give the news to AUSTRALIANS. If you disagree, you must not like Australia. Be careful. (This is rapidly changing as Donald Trump has a higher Australian score than most Aussies combined.)
3 Absolutely FUCK populists. Who the fuck do they think they are? They're Australian, that's who they are. So fucking support them. They think there's something wrong with Australia though and FUCK THAT.
4 Any sort of regulation not imposed on corporate bodies is destined to fail. If you try to regulate anyfuckingthing you can expect your ass to hit the curb come election day.
5 Any tax money spent on anything but education, healthcare, or welfare is going to get you lynched. By the way, FUCK welfare however, we will absolutely not tolerate it's removal. Fuck you, that money goes to Australians.
6 I can overstate how much we fucking detest foreigners.BUT, they deserve a fair go. By a fair go I mean a bashing. This lasts only until we realize the benefits, such as choice heroine from the Vietnamese or 3am kebabs from the Lebanese. There are 3 main groups of foreigners vying for a bashing nowadays: Muslims, Pacific Islanders, and the Chinese. In that order. Indians are their own class of foreigner: close enough to be neighbors, dirty enough to alienate, and a love of sports that just meshes right.
7 We do not like the other 2 major members of the anglosphere. They think their dicks are bigger and that doesn't fucking fly. They are usually exempt from bashing, we are required to banter. HARD. Being too good at banter will result in a bashing.

The last four to six governments have swapped and changed so much to win elections that Australia is fucked.
The current government is basically trying to fix mistake after mistake without admitting it and it's costing the Australian people.
Personally, I believe we need a revolution or at the very least, become a republic and overhaul the entire government.

Labor was a socialist party. Hence Labor.
The right wing faction of the party came from the ranks of the Unionists. They cared about Workers Rights. They also supported racist policies like the white australia policy. Because muh labor competition etc. They were socialist in economics but conservative in social policy. The left wing of the party was from the student unions. They were socialist and liberal in social policy. The left wing pretty much owns the entire party now.
Liberals refer to economic liberality. They are economically liberal, socially conservative.
The Nationals are just a bunch of drunk farmers that were aligned with the Liberals to grab white working class votes away from Labor.

Really I'm for any party that will halt mass immigration from 3rd world shit holes.
This country is stable enough to support itself and with a population of 23 million its but a little dot on the map, we've built it to be a very neat little country, ample work opportunities, good living conditions and a once great culture. The only constant conflict, social issues and violence we have is caused by immigrants from non-western cultures, lebs, sudo's, gooks and muslims. This country is going down the shitter, make no doubt about it. Something has to give eventually.
