He's talking specifically about classes, so he's right. But for any settings other than academic or scientific, we use imperial.

We learn it, but no one uses it outside of work, and people usually forget it right after it is taught in school. The only things we know are liters and CM.

>>
falling for the metric Jew is there a more cucked nation than Britain? Giving up their own system is embarrassing.
>n-no we still use m-miles

Disgusting. Replacing an arbitrary system with another arbitrary system is not progress.
>>
>>69865431
1 litre is exactly 1000 cubic centimeters, it's also the volume of one kilogram of pure water at maximum density and standard pressure. Due to being decimal infinite like other metric systems, the litre is very efficient for any kind of scientific work as well as medicine.
>>
>>69865735
At least they still have MPH, and still measure human height in feet. A few years ago the EU started to make them put their road signs and overpass signs in both imperial and metric, because of foreign truck drivers. Pretty cucked. But they started using metric in the 60s, so it's been that way for a long time.
>>
>>69865955
And that's where they went wrong. They had the clout even when they joined the EU to tell them to stuff it, but they didn't. They can take their moral victories with their mph and gallons, but it's pure humiliation.

I'm just glad that we haven't been cucked yet. It's funny, I work for a US based aerospace company. It's hilarious when the fresh faced college kids come in expecting to use metric. Nope, we still use imperial, faggot.
>>
>>69864288

I'm happy to hear that. There is nothing wrong with imperial and no reason to change. People use metric to be alike. We don't need to be like everyone else.

>>
>>69867014
Doesn't matter. We have been using it since this country came into existence, and have never had problems with it.
>>
>>69866732
The problem is that people don't realize that metric measurements are just as arbitrary as imperial. There's no reason to change, it would be "progress for the sake of progress."

As an aside, remember Chafee's democratic announcement? He was the clown that pledged to put America on metric, "to join the rest of the world." Fuck that.

And yeah, we use imperial because our contractors use imperial. Maybe the other way around. Chicken and egg problem. Either way, both systems are arbitrary as fuck. And at the end of the day, conversion is simpler than ever. Hell, I think our engineers might just plug it into google to do it for them.
>>
>>69864854

Our science community has been asking that forever, I guess most of the country wants to preserve the imperial system for cultural reasons.

>>69867282
When it was first measured, it was supposed to be defined as a ten millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole or some such shit. Right now it's defined as the distance travelled by light in a specific fraction of a second.
A Litre is simply one dm3

I understand that feet and whatnot might be easier to define, but the metric system is still far simpler since everyone immediately understands what you're talking about and can make accurate comparisons far quicker than if they have to convert anything in the Imperial system. Even your own damn scientists use the metric system because they've realised that the Imperial one is too much of a hassle.

It's not even about simplicity, it's a question of comfort. I understand that you may be more accustomed to the system you grew up with, but that's only something shared by the Americans and Brits. No one else.

Yeah, for goods.

People are measured in stonnes and pounds. All stones weigh the same so we can always check by just testing how much a stone ways.

There aren't many stones in shops so we cant test.

We buy things with pounds and always have one lying around. All we need to do is find a stone of 14 pound coins and we can measure ourselves.

The base measurement of 1 liter/1 meter maybe, but it breaks down to 1/10, 1/100 and 1/1000 which is a hell of a lot more logical than what you've got. Converting 15498 cm to meters is easy, just move the comma. Converting 15498 inches to feet is difficult.
It's just silly.

You can keep your pounds, mph and fahrenheit if you want though, since ours is just as random (okay, maybe celsius is better but i'll let it slide)

>what is volume
Measures in cubic metres
>>
Imperial units are scaled to the proportions of a human body. In inch is a finger segment. A foot is a human foot. A yard is a leg. A mile is the distance of a short walk. These units are natural and intuitive, a convenient way to visualize, and measure distances, weights, volumes....etc.

In any task, it's always best to use the unit of measurement that's most convenient to the situation. For example, old sailors used to use fathoms for vertical distances, and miles for horizontal distances. Because their world was a pancake, this made sense.

Metric units are very useful for a scientist, but might not be so useful for the common person. Conversion factors are easy. The notion that we should mandate the entire society use the same arbitrary system of measurement used by a couple scientists off in a laboratory somewhere is insane.

This is a communist idea, where society is scientifically planned and managed, and everyone is an indistinguishable entity.

I'm not sure why Europoors are so obsessed with base 10.

You know, originally the plan was to convert all clocks to base 10 as well as measurement units. You'd also have 10 days in a week, and 10 months in a year.

The thing is, no one went for it. It was a total failure.

The fact is that the most convenient systems of measure are not always nice easy factors of 10. If you're too stupid to handle conversion factors, fine. But your limitations shouldn't be determining the standards of measure for the entire society.

Why?

Why this obsession with elminating conversion factors? Are you really that shitty at math?

You should design your measurement units such that they are a convenient way to visualize and intuit volumes, distances, weights....etc. Which is why imperial units are superior, because they're scaled to the proportions of the human body
>>

My town is in the process of metrication. For the past two decades we had our road signs in imperial and metric. The metric signs have been coming down. It's obsolete. No one needs it. In school we learned only metric, but our locals schools are switching to imperial only. When I was younger the news paper and news channel weather reports used to use both metric and imperial. Now only imperial. Live on the US-,Mexican border in Arizona. No reason for the metric system in this country.

My argument is: A big point that people who argue for the metric system make is how well it works with base 10. (Base 10 is easy to convert, base 10 is how humans think)

Fahrenheit works better when taking into account base 10 and realistic human comfort levels.

>>
>>69871173
It is, but they're not part of the same system tho.
The unit for measuring temperature is K (Kelvin)
Kelvin is based on energy, Celsius is based on water's freezing and boiling points.
>>
>>69871410
Celsius temperature scale also called centigrade temperature scale, is the scale based on 0 for the freezing point of water and 100 for the boiling point of water.

>>
>>69871170

>>
>>69871256
No, but human comfort levels are arbitrary and subjective, and as soon as you introduce any given temperature measuring system people are going to begin associating various levels with level of comfort anyways, so it ultimately is a moot point as there's no difficulty whatsoever to someone used to the Celsius measuring system to tell whether a temperature is comfortable, cold, or hot.

>>69871406
And introducing a second system just because it feels "more natural" when the whole rest of the world has no trouble whatsoever? No, what you have is baby duck syndrome.

Celsius is perfectly fine for measuring comfort, you simply don't need to go up to 100. 100 degrees Celsius is relevant for your comfort when you're talking about saunas though, you generally don't want to go over 110 degrees C.

You can easily tell 60f from 70f, yet have no fucking clue whether something is 220f or 240f. Humans evolved to tell interpret a specific temperature range. Water's boiling point is well into the "can't even feel because your nerves are dying" range.
