Trust me, it's a matter of political identity and associated issues.
In Romania, the opposite happens. The young college educated people are right-wingers who want a smaller parliament, smaller salaries for them, privatization of public services that don't work very well and so on. While the old illiterate people who talk about the "good ol' days" are the strongest voting base for the social democrats. They're the ones obsessed with going to church or remembering how well it was living during Ceausescu's time (I kid you not).
So it's not really about the economical side, but everything else associated with it. Young people can go in either direction fiscally (that's why a lot of libertarians are young adults) but socially they almost always lean left and progressive, or relatively centrist at best. It's conservative's fault for setting themselves up as the "No Fun Allowed" party in the United States.
Because most college students aren't in programs for worthwhile degrees. They don't realize that degree inflation is a real thing. People already call the bachelor's the new high school diploma, there's no way in hell that's going to go away if they just make the degrees accessible to the population that doesn't have the mental capacity to earn a scholarship.

This generation is happy to be takers because they ultimately think the government is a one way avenue where they should be on the receiving end without having to do anything to contribute. What they don't realize is that if everyone is a taker then nobody is a contributer and then there's nothing left to take. To solve that simple issue they simply look for more people to take from, and in this case it's the rich, or "the 1%" as they so eloquently put it. They think that just because someone makes more money than them that the richer person should be obligated to support the poorer person and they justify it because they don't give a shit about the richer person and they're under the impression that it's completely fair to force them to contribute more.
Rather than aspire to work within their means to achieve great things in life, they piss and moan until someone gives them a "free" lunch.
What ultimately destroys this philosophy is if someone were to point out that no matter how bad they perceive their financial situation to be, there are people who are even worse off than them, and asking them to contribute to the less fortunate more than they do (if they do at all) would have them saying stuff like "no I won't do that because it's not fair" or "I would but I'm already struggling to pay off my iPhone 6s+ and gas prices are really high right now", completely and unironically putting themselves as a hypocrite.
