How does this woman define the problem, then? Isn't the problem that students are paying more than they should be paying for their loans? If that's the case, then reducing interest rates will, indeed, decrease the amount of money that students pay on these loans.

Or does this woman define the problem differently? If so, then elaborate.

>>
Basic economics, yes. The problem with this dumb kike bitch is that the economics she's talking about are way too basic.

She thinks lowering the interest rates will result in more loans being taken; simple demand curve right? What she's failing to take into account is that the demand for federal student loans is pretty inelastic. How high the interest rates on federal student loans are never really prevented anybody from getting one, especially since they're lower than any private loan anyway. They probably didn't teach elasticity in her garbage high school economics class; this probably has something to do with why so many young people love Bernie.

I really fucking hate these extremely arrogant people who pretend to be experts on subjects they know nothing about.

basic economics dictates everything is perfectly supply-demand driven. Raise price, demand drops. Raise demand, price rises.

applied economics notes how some things are less supply-demand driven than others. Federal loans are one of these things. By effectively dropping the price of a loan, the fallacy is that more people ought to take out loans, but this is not true.

This cunt thinks that if you lower interest rates on student loans more people will get them because they're cheaper. That's just not the case -- demand for student loans isn't really responsive to interest rate changes.

To provide examples: demand for college itself is more elastic, a LOT more people take tuition into account than the fucking interest rate on a student loan.

Another thing that has an inelastic demand would be cigarettes; all these excise taxes on them aren't stopping the vast majority of smokers.

Low interest rates only increase spending when you can declare bankruptcy and/or die which clears your debt. It encourages people to rack up debt and spend like crazy until they keel over and die.
Student loans do not clear via death or bankruptcy so low interest rates don't really do anything other than make people feel temporarily secure. You still have a looming debt your entire life that is impossible to get rid of.
It's basically just a bandaid on a broken system.

>Implying these aren't all factors leading to an increase in demand for four year degrees, leading to higher tuition prices.

It's all based on access to funds. It used to be the only people who could go to college were those who could really afford it. Now everyone is expected to go, even if they're getting an African Transgender Studies degree.

I understand the point about elasticity, but if it's not a factor, why have an interest rate at all? Why not just make all Federal student loans interest free if it doesn't affect demand at all.
>>
>>69854091
Wtf is this even supposed to mean I swear you motherfuckers always comment on their last name I looked that shit up and it's a German name meaning "white man"
>>
>>69855102

This. They're going to borrow no matter what the rate is. Don't know how anyone can be this stupid.
>>
>>69855108

elasticity is just a term that describes a goods demand due to price fluctuation (in this context)

something completely inelastic: emergency medical care (you're gonna get an appendectomy whether it's $500 or $50000)

something elastic: cellphones (demand will go through the roof for a $5 iphone and completely go away for a $50000 iphone)

in this case, the demand for federal loans are pretty inelastic. not completely inelastic like medical care, but demand will not rise very much due to decreased interest rates. desu, most people who get student loans get subsidized loans which don't accrue interest while you're in school. If you can pay off a $40,000 loan in less than 5 years then you've only accrued about 4,000 in interest at current rates i believe. Lowering the interest rates will make you save 3-5% unless you never plan on paying your student loans which wouldn't matter anyway.

In Canada you have to file an application to have your loans waived. Your family can still get screwed over though. The government will take all your assets and any of your families assets they believe are associated to you.
Generally you need a lawyer just to deal with the aftermath of someone dying with a still active student loan because it gets pretty messy.
>>
>>69856827
We said that for Bernie because Bernie said "if mortgages can be this low, why can't student loans?" and that shows a hilarious ignorance of what collateral is. Nice try though.
>>
>>69854507
A) College loans are at or close to maximum looseness. Lenders do not take into account collateral or future earning potential of lendees, hence the need to keep student debts persistent through bankruptcy.
B) The supply of college places is not static.
C) Tuition has been rising in America out of pace with the actual rate of supply/demand.

But hey, let's make up facts so that simplistic economic formulas fit and we can justify universities and banks destroying entire generations of prosperity, right guys?
>>
>>69855964
BANKS WONT LEND MONEY TO PEOPLE WITH LIBERAL ARTS DEGREE'S AT THE PROPOSED TRUMP FEDERAL FUNDS RATE..

probably should have checked flag.. but seriously. you have no concept of how money gets lent out..

do you think your neighbor would give you money for a risky adventure into a field that can't pay back the principle at an incredibly low rate?

this will increase the competitive nature of education, remove the bullshit and increase productivity of humans.

banks lend each other money, at 1.25 percent overnight rates.. which is the federal funds rate, because they know their partner has assets that will cover the loss.

EDUCATION HAS NO ASSET. its not a house, a car or a business with tangible goods.

I find it highly unlikely that the global economy would crash on a student loan crisis alone. Why, my friend, we still have the China and Australia housing bubble along with the crash of the Russian and South American economies to prepare for these days. When BRIC falls, then you put on your brown pants. Not before.
>>
>>69857131
I thought you guys did loans through your federal and state governments the same as Canada?
We don't do any student loans via banks directly so the government sets a fixed rate based on your degree and current tuition cap as to how much you get. Sciences get more money than arts since their tuition costs more for example.
As far as I'm aware there really isn't any background checks or looking into exactly what you're taking here in Canada, they hand out loans pretty easily here. I always applied and had my funds dispersed within a week or two tops.

The problem with millenials is (FYI I'm an airline pilot on a HKG layover, just pointing this out before some pol tard calls me a chink who doesn't understand America) they think everyone is entitled to college. Hint: YOURE NOT.

If:
1. Your parents can't afford to pay for your university education in its entirety
2. You aren't distinguished enough to merit a scholarship of some kind

Then:
1. You shouldn't go college.
2. Go to trade school. There is nothing demeaning about earning an honest living as an electrician.
3. Or, enlist in the US military. Spend 4 years in hell and come out and have nearly free education courtesy of the GI Bill. Quite a few students in my university were using this.

The problem we have is millenials coming out of school with mounds of debt and a useless degrees. They get 35,000 dollar a year jobs and wonder what went wrong.

What went wrong is, you weren't entitled to a college education in the first place.

High School is basically a college prep course, their teachers tell them college is the most important thing,
the general media never has looked favorably on the blue collar so that makes anyone who works with their hands look stupid

corporatism
there are also issues with protectionist policies like licensing and accreditation
no one really mentions how colleges have had to scale up massively to meet demand either
>>
The interest rate should be based on the risk etc. of the loan. You can forclose on a mortgage and sell the house. You cannot reposses class hours or erase someone's memories and then sell them. Thus one would expect the interest rates to reflect this. Someone mentioned Hayek, and I don't know where exactly he'd fall on this sort of thing, but I think he would have had no problem letting the interest rates simply work themselves out naturally based on risk etc. and I don't think he'd prefer tinkering with the rate to account for the complex effects we think* we understand about lowering it.

Well she is kind of right
Trump supporter, not a cuck. Just.....
>hear me out
.....
The lower the interest rate, the less of a risk it is perceived for such a high pay off (college degree)

that means more people will apply for loans, get the loans and go to college. Now, that results in universities increasing tuition because of these guaranteed federal loans (and basic supply and demand)

>everyone wins except the student dealing with skyrocketing tuition costs

The is the sub prime mortgage crisis, but for college and no end in sight. College kids don't produce economically so they have no power and nothing will get done. Just look for this generation to be a generation starting life in massive debt

When government gets involved in our capitalistic system, even for a noble cause, they fuck over the average person.

TLDR: government tries to be a bro and make sure everyone can get a loan for college, universities increase tuition like crazy, college makes money, government makes money, college student crippled with debt for 30 years

>we need to get rid of government backed college loans. Problem solved overnight. Will it happen?

Supply and demand. What's the issue? More people taking out loans would increase the chances of them actually paying back said loan. How's that bad?

One of the smartest posts I've seen on here, and it's something I keep constantly saying.

People need to get the fuck over themselves, there's nothing wrong with blue collar work. Alas, "guidance" counselors and high schools are to blame. At my high school, all of the "go to college or you'll be a broke loser" rhetoric started and was going full blast for 2 whole years.

The plan would work fine if every dumb fuck that inhabited this country didn't think they need college.

>college education, 110k a year
>no college, flip burgers for 7.50 an hour

Our entire high school careers, this bullshit is pumped into our heads. There is no in between in their minds, when in reality you can do perfectly fucking well for yourself without that college slip of paper
>>
>>69859473
Thanks man. Nice to see at least someone read my post.

There is nothing wrong or demeaning about eraning a living as an electrician. Or welder.

Or cops. Hell, I've met police officers who were retired at 40. Yes RETIRED at 40 years old. Enter the academy at 18, work 20 years, and you're done at 38-40. These guys were on their second career at age 40 and just having a good time.

The young people of today who insist that college is for everyone are really off the mark.

It was never intended for the masses.

Absolutely nothing wrong with blue collar work, but I see so many people my age (mid 20s) who think it's just entirely beneath them. It's unreal.

But hey, I don't give a fuck anymore. I dropped out of college 1 year in and make 111k a year as a Linux Systems Engineer.

Best thing about America, even today, is that if there's a will there's a way.

I don't think this chick understands how debt works. College loan = $23k, Now does a high-interest rate or a low-interest rate increase debt on this?

huh its almost like when a college or any other business is guaranteed to be paid the price of their service inevitably goes up...........

so the solution is to get the government to pay for the college of anyone who wants to go.

Yeah that's the thing. I guess kids now are ashamed of it.

I'll date myself and say that im over 40 (I'm the airline pilot fag checking in) so I'm out of touch with what average Johnny Highschool kid thinks.

But our country has a problem if teenagers today think there is something wrong with becoming an auto mechanic.

Or enlisting in the US military. If you insist on going to college and you're parents can't pay for it and/or you aren't exceptional enough to merit a scholarship either academic or athletic....

Englist. Serve 4 years of unpleasantness and go to college nearly for free at age 22, courtesy of the Montgomery GI Bill.

Is this why in the 1960s you could go to college on just a part time job?

College education is commodity as opposed to something practical like in the older days so people are going to jew it like crazy. What needs to be done is to make community college and Trade schools more meaningful, and as a result, more valuable to go to.
>>
>>69854671

So the solution woule be to stop loans for college tuition.

If no one can afford it, the demand drops to zero, prices are slashed to nothing and everyone can afford college?

OP is a fuckin dumbass.

Current Average student loan for 4 years degree = $88,000
Current student loan interest rate = 5.29%

If Student takes out $100,000 @ 3%, it will still be lower than the $88,000 @ 5.29%

We're not all Ivy league bound here. There are finite seats. What, you think everybody that applies for residency will get accepted?
>>
>>69854507
>The interest doesn't effect the amount of the loan. Nor does interest have an effect on tuition.
>interest rates are meant to reflect the risks in giving out that loan
>Student loans are 100% set for life, Bankruptcy will not forgive them. Thus making them no risk loans.
>High interest on no risk loans is fucking dumb. All they will do is cause economic slow down

>Free education has been the largest factor in economic growth in every country ever.

The better universities hold high grade standards. They don't let dumb fuck 2.0 in.
Thus supple and demand is still in effect. Access to money is not the only factor.

Higher interest loans could help fix some inflation problems. It would make those with money more willing to loan out their money.
BUT (yes a big but) the government has been bailing out bad lenders. Normally high interest loans are done for risky loans. But when the government bails out risky loaners there is no risk.

We have two conflating problems. Loans are risk free and require low interest rates. Inflation is high and requires high interest rates.

The problem stems from the 2008 bail out. The fix is we need to put risk back in loans.

Who is the only person fighting to do that???????????????????????????????????????? It is Bernie
>>
>>69857554
is this proof the hall of cost never happen?

she thinks lowering the effective price will increase demand so the price will go up again
