Colonialism in India is interesting. You have to remember before the East India Company became established, India was a part of the Mughal Empire.
In the Mughal Empire, you had a somewhat feudal system where constant expansion was needed to feed its coffers and for lords to pay taxes. The Empire itself was Persian and had little coherency with its subjects in many ways. When the Empire "ended", it ended with a simple asterisk that sad that funds payed to the Emperor went to the EIC.
Under British rule, the EIC essentially rearranged Indian society through their vassals to maximize revenue and production of raw goods for industries in Britain while destroying the native industries by forcing them to not only compete with them for raw goods, but also flooding the market with cheap factory made goods. So, you saw a nation that once produced a quarter of all manufactured goods in the world dwindle to almost nothing in half a century.
After the Sepoy mutiny and the formal claim of India by the British crown, not only was this process continued with vassals mainly collecting tax and doing bitch work, but you also had the reworking of the economy further and military structure to allow British troops better navigation throughout the region, to train diplomats in the British style and thus descredit local institutions, and by allowing specific taxes that further destroyed local industries.
Long story short, Britain effectively out competed all local industry and rearranged the country to better suit their rule. Once Britain left, the country became very isolationist and had almost no economic growth for years while trying to recover. Add this to a huge disenfranchisement between ruling and lower classes, the civil wars and Pakistani secession, a market where Indian goods are rarely competitive, and local despots making their best claims, and you get India: The Worst Country in the World.
