Most people aren't convinced by any arguments made to them directly. People are tied to their opinions as a part of themselves, so attacking their opinions is essentially attacking a piece of them. People get very defensive about these things, which is why most arguments that take place outside (and sometimes inside) philosophical debates usually devolve into screaming anecdotes at each other.
Speaking as a former Christian who's since become an apatheist (I just don't fucking care), I was also incredibly defensive whenever someone challenged my beliefs. It was only when I saw other people arguing and could stand apart as a third party that I could actually hear what the opposition was saying and not simply close my ears and sing hymns to myself.
So I suppose the lesson is to work on your argument skills but don't expect to change the mind of anyone you talk to directly. If you do it right, you might change the minds of a few people in your audience.
