My grandfather's shed full of vintage boating equipment (described as "useless crap" by his contemporaries) got my grandmother a new car and brand new windows in her house after he passed. That's the thing non-collectors don't understand. They think that the money spent on the collectible just vanishes when it is purchased, like a meal or a concert ticket. In reality, if you do even a minimal amount of research, your collection can function as an investment.
I have around $4K worth firearms, firearm accessories, and various militaria items. Not much, but I'm a college student with bills to pay. You know how much I spent on all of it? Maybe $2.5K.
Again, it's not a significant amount of money in the grand scheme of things, but it illustrates my point that you are retaining, and for many people like me, GAINING value over time. Whereas $20 spent on a movie ticket and some popcorn is just gone.
I've noticed that a lot of the hate towards collectors comes from people who have few or no possessions of real value. Underwater on a mortgage, shitty furniture, plastic econobox, etc.
