Messing around with unit designs in the workshop has considerably more scope than is obvious. I played for ages just approving or dismissing automatic proposals before I found out you can do cool stuff it will never suggest, like fit the probe team "weapon" to a hydrofoil and sail around hacking sea bases. Often you can significantly improve a unit for only a modest extra cost. The most dramatic example is probably the Planetbuster, the default version is disappointing but change its powerplant to the Singularity Engine and it leaves a crater big enough to vaporise 5 cities or more.

University are arguably the "best" faction because their weakness can be negated by building the Hunter-Seeker algorithm, plus they have an early advantage gathering alien artefacts with the free network node in each base.
