Yes and no. You can still bust your ass in America and move up, you just need to do it wisely. I worked right out of highschool for a couple years, then put myself through school. Growing up I was poor, there were times when neither of my parents had a job. You can create a better life for yourself, and especially your children, if you work hard and smart.
That said, if you're a woman or black with reasonable intelligence, it's easy mode thanks to affirmative action.

most states have a higher min wage than 7.50 as well, the Dakotas are probably 7.50 because it's cheap to live there, but places like New York, Illinois, etc the wage is higher, I think it's like 8.25 or 8.50 in Illinois
Keep in mind a lot of these jobs aren't meant to support a fucking family, it's unfortunate some people have to try that on a minimum wage job but I'm a college student working part time and I get 9.25, with pretty much no prior skills
