Stalin is seen as nearly as bad as Hitler.
Nobody really cares about Trotsky and some people even idolize him somewhat, but I actually think he was a gigantic dick. He was a wartime leader and carried out plenty of atrocities in that capacity.

I think a very well researched character to exemplify the whole corruption and downfall of communist idealism is Felix Dzierzynski.
Check him out.
He was charged with estabilishing the anti-counterrevolution bureau, which quickly boiled down to people who would torture you to death on an anonymous tip. Once Lenin sent him a telegraph to ask how many prisoners does he hold in one investigative arrest in moscov. After getting 1500 for an answer he sent it back crossed to mark as read. Dzierzynski was confused, so he ordered them all dead by sunrise to be on a safe side.
He is still praised a hero - the unquenching flame of revolution.
