Steve Sailer has written about this. When Obama first arrived in Chicago and began building his political career, he found his cosmopolitan, diverse background a hindrance. A lot of blacks didn't consider him truly black. That's when he started going to Wright's church and associating with local black leaders in order to develop a blacker image.
Sailer compared this to Yankee George W. Bush remaking himself as a Texan to build his political career there, and to his brother Jeb who built a political career in largely Hispanic Miami-Dade by marrying a Mexican woman, becoming fluent in Spanish, and converting to Catholicism. In fact, Jeb himself has identified as a Hispanic.
