The essence of western liberalism is personal freedom, sociopolitical emancipation of the masses etc. Asian sociopolitics has a far greater emphasis on collective societal well-being and cohesive identity (sometimes, of course manufactured and enforced by the ruling political regime). I get the sense that East asian countries, particularly those who have had a history of internal dispute and/or were exploited by early aggressive imperialism have a heightened awareness of the fact that the death of collective identity and nationalism is the demise of a nation. The means they use to achieve this often involves the restriction of personal freedoms and freedom of speech, suppression of dissent etc. Not saying whether this is a particularly good or bad thing; it can go either the way.
On Amos Yee: did he deserve to be arrested? Probably not. He has obvious autism spectrum disorder coupled with some form of NPD. Did he deserve the widespread ridicule that followed? Definitely.
