It's the towns and smaller medieval cities that are pretty and full of cool historical buildings. York, Cambridge/Ely, Oxford, Bath and a few others are the nicest to wander around.

I'm kinda in the same boat and America's on the bottom of my 'to visit' list for that exact reason. I want to experience American culture and check out all their national parks but they're both things you need to spend a serious amount of time in a country to do.
I'm thinking I'll wait until I'm a couple of years into my career and work there for a bit or take a sabbatical, convert a 4x4 into something I can live in, then do a massive road trip from Alaska to Mexico (desu the dream is to keep heading south until I hit Patagonia).
The road trip idea is honestly one of my life goals at the moment. Just get some big old reliable landcruiser, (something basic and crude but able to make it through proper 4x4 trails), kit it out with bbq/bed/solar panels/shower/etc and then spend a year or so cruising through the entire country. With the solar panels I'd be able to just stop and sit in Yosemite, Yellowstone, Denali for as long as I wanted. I'd bring along a kayak, climbing gear and my hunting bow. Meet anons along the way. Occasionally staying at 5* hotels along the way when I get tired of roughing it. Couchsurfing through the big cities so I can get some human contact and soak up the nightlife/culture.
Any anons know how long US$80,000 would last me doing that sort of trip?

Austin, Texas. Big liberal college city with every type of culture and a lot of attractions. Lots of partying, lots of 'cowboys', lots of 'hippies', lots of dumb college sluts, with tons of music festivals, marijuana is easily accessible and food from all over the world similar to NYC.. Close enough to San Antonio, Houston, and the Gulf of Mexico. It's still the south but a complete melting pot so hospitable racists of every color and creed. I would assume that's representative of "American Culture". Plus, you won't run into unrecognizable southern accents except if you're in the middle of nowhere.
