The official reason was that the task of our army had changed over the last years and it's not about defending Germany anymore but about carrying out peace-missions, for which you need specially trained soldiers and not draft grunts.

I think 1-2 years of mandatory service are good for instilling values in the weak, but at the same time it diminshes the potential / early days of the successful (though, if done nationally, all people are on the same scale, so starting later isn't THAT bad).

But service in our army won't transform anybody into some kind of super-human or will be a permanently life-changing experience, that is just a meme. If you were an uninspired and unproductive NEET before, you will be afterwards. Except if you choose to take a carreer in the army and do it as your job.

Conscription would be a PR nightmare in the States. We're especially casualty-averse after Vietnam, and every conscript death would be reported in the press as another instance of Americans dying to fight another pointless overseas war that they didn't sign up for. With a volunteer military we can always fall back on the excuse that "They knew what they were getting into." This doesn't work with conscription.
Add to that the morale problems. Professional soldiers have more training and the military is a viable career path for many. Conscripts are just there until it's their time to head back. As such professionals have greater elan than conscript armies because everyone chose to be there. Esprit de corps counts for a hell of a lot.

Conscripts are definitely unmotivated and inexperienced. During an inspection the regular armourer spotted a tiny hairline crack in a hammer that none of us conscripts did, or cared to.
