Talmud is not something you study by yourself unless you've already gone through schooling for it as it is written arguments made to be read as a group. Even then, most rabbis prefer oral argument.
Essentially, the reason /pol/ has a field day with quotes from Talmud is because Talmud entertains very unusual arguments and has tons of arguments against arguments. For instance, this is how you get that it is unethical to lend money with interest to Jews, but not goyim.
