For some very entry level stuff, read Freakonomics. It doesn't have much good stuff, but it is good to teach seeking subtle patterns in things.
It's hidding a big red pill though, they point the cause of the wrong prediction about a crime wave drowing the US to the legallization of abortion. The expected crimes never happened because the criminals were aborted. Analyzing who gets the most abortions completes the puzzle.
