A static defense has been dated.
Mobile defense systems are far better, and with improvements in technology being able to track incoming targets (potential illegal crossing) events would be overall better idea since you could detect said events and then send a mobile force to deal with the targets.
Static defenses are useless without a mobile component of the defense patrolling it. If a mobile component can patrol the static defense, then the necessity of the static defense becomes moot.
Also, a 1000 + mile static defense can be rendered useless with a hole big enough to fit a beaner through it, a rope, or a ladder. At that point, the rest of the static defense is useless. The only thing stopping that illegal crossing is the mobile force.
My hope is that, Trump has no real intention of building the wall. Since Mexico is suppose to pay for it, Trump is not fully accountable for the Wall being built. Which means if Trump doesn't build the Wall then he can just say Mexico didn't pay for it, and he refused to raise our taxes to pay for it. ... To compensate, he'd invest in a better Mobile Force for boarder protection.
He needs to not be a dumbass. The wall was dumb. Instead of ranting everywhere, he needs a whole lot of people to sit down with him and educate him on the major details of how everything in international policy works. He needs his ideas vetted by experts before going on television. The wall is so dumb it should lose him the campaign.
Ann Coulter was right. It's getting harder to defend him. At this point, he needs to start gradually bringing his ass to the center, and he needs to drop the fucking rhetoric and start speaking as if he is already President.
In the beginning it was OK, but he got the attention he wanted and then some. Now that all eyes are on him he needs to change his game. Act and speak presidential now, be authoritative, but not mean.

I agree, however the fact of the matter is that the wall is a necessity. With thermal cameras, drones, buffer areas, and quick response forces, in addition to other things, the wall acts as part of the greater defense. People can go from crossing hundreds at a time to getting lucky with maybe getting away with a couple. The wall also would free up border patrol agents to act as QRFs because they would no longer need to patrol the 1,000+ mile border.

If he keeps repeating the same message over and over again, then the media has no more material to hit him with. Which means, he can't be attacked on policy alone or have the media misrepresent him because everyone has heard the same message and will know that the media is lying or portraying him inaccurately.

I just can't justify 10 billion USD + upkeep cost of 10 billion USD every seven years. That money can be better spent on more border patrol agents and better technology.
An unattended static defense is just not useful. If you have to ability to detect through thermal imaging and drones, and then respond with a mobile defense, then there is no point to the static component of the defense.
