Firstly, I'd argue that she's underperforming, considering the fact that she's been running for president pretty much the moment she left the State Department.
Secondly, every time Bill opens his mouth on the campaign trail, her numbers drop. They keep sidelining him. Millennials who don't remember the Lewinsky thing are finding out about it, and they're PISSED at the things that Hillary said about the women; this is actually where the Virtuous Victim bullshit helps republicans.
Third, she's beating a strawman socialist that I actually think is a plant to avoid the appearance of a coronation. The fact that it's gone on this long when Hillary should have had most of it locked up by now highlights her weakness.
The only people who are voting for her are blacks and old people. Sanders is winning everywhere else. Hell, he just pulled ahead in Wisconsin. He's actually competitive in New York, which is supposed to be her home state!
Anyway, in terms of the general election, I'd MUCH rather have Trump or Cruz face Hillary than Bernie. Hillary's people aren't energized, they're not totally pumped to get out and vote. Republicans ARE.
I'm confident that even if Cruz gets the nomination at a contested convention, he'll basically be able to walk to the White House against Hillary. Trump would have a harder battle, because he's got so many negative opinions against him, but it's doable.
But I think he has to start NOW. There's literally no reason for Trump to not start blasting Hillary every chance he gets. If he wants to be the nominee, he needs to start acting like it; focus on Hillary, start laying the groundwork for a scorched earth campaign. Completely fucking destroy her. It shouldn't be too hard.

She may - that's certainly the only reason she is where she is. Hillary has essentially no positive accomplishments, negative accomplishments like Benghazi, and generally people just do not like her at all. She keeps getting put forth as the inevitable nominee and yet gets a lot of resistance from her own party.
Now, I am not predicting the next election here, but I think the poll numbers now are not really where they will be at down the road. The Republican party is doing everything they can to destroy Trump, and if he is the nominee we will either see this go into overdrive or they will back off. It's hard to know which it will be, but this will likely have a significant effect when it changes. People are also not really analyzing them head to head and outside of the primaries most of the electorate has probably not even thought about this much yet.
Next, we need to really look at the debates. We know more or less what Hillary will do, so it's whether Trump manages to wreck her or not and how he comes across. Trump is unpredictable in these, so it's again hard to know.
Finally, it's just a fact that Trump is going to have to get a good 5% over Hillary in major swing states to overcome margin of fraud unless he manages to halt it prior to the election.
