Why is so-called "populism" supposedly wrong?

Isn't it the whole point of democracy?

The reason why it's wrong is because of Tyranny of the Majority. It goes with the phrase two wolves and one sheep vote on what's for dinner.
>>
>>69730334
So, democracy, then.
>>
>>69729933
It's not. Rome would have imploded hundreds of years early if not for populist leaders.
>>
>>69729933
A great leader gives the people what they want regardless of if they know they want it. They generally go with popular opinion but know when to take a stand.

A shill gives his friends and his corrupt buddies what they want at the expense of the people.

A populist does whatever the people want him to do even if it's fucking retarded.

A good example - in WWII the populist opinion was that America should stay out of the war. FDR pushed the country into arming the other nations and building up its wartime capacity anyways. Then the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor and suddenly everybody was happy they had a president that was smarter than common wisdom.

Democracy is wrong. Representative republics are good.

This fucking retarded law in California where they have to have cancer warnings on EVERYTHING which was voted in by the people of California is a prime example of where populism can go wrong.

If the minority has a problem with the majority, then they can either try and get people to see their way or fuck off to some other country.
>>
>>69732332
If it's what the majority wants, then that's what should happen.
>>
>>69732351
>then they can either try and get people to see their way or fuck off to some other country.

The majority believes every country should be a democracy or so help you the US will not tolerate your existence

Now what does the minority do?
>>
>>69732332
Maybe companies should stop putting cancerous shit in their products.
>>
>>69729933
The founders of democracy had issues with democracy.
Democracies have the seeds to destroy themselves. That's why you need a constitution.
>>
>>69729933
yup

the establishment just labels those who actually want to do what the people want
>>
>>69729933

Because democracy is also wrong.

Here;s a thought. What if the majority vote to abolish democracy and establish a king? In that instance, doesn't the phrase "tyranny of the majority" become much more literal? Now what?

>inb4 muh constitution
Pieces of fucking paper. The majority can vote to abolish those too. For example, democrats being Anti-gun. Slowly but surely, the majority will destroy this amendment.

Did you read the sign I linked to? Coffee is inherantly carcinogenic. This is exactly why populism failed, nobody thought through this initiative and thought it would merely serve to scold Mcdonalds for adding carcinogens to their products.

No, literally, every food with fucking char on it causes cancer. Parking lots cause cancer because of car exhaust. So many things cause cancer, often for completely unavoidable reasons, the law became pointless because everybody ended up ignoring the prop 65 warnings. Because when everything is dangerous, nothing is.

If instead this law was considered by a few expert that actually thought about the consequences instead of a bunch of voters that thought about it for 10 seconds, it would have never been passed.

Because the inherent quality of populism is the turning of the jacket following the gained position. It's selling cheap dreams to gullible people who cannot understand what's possible and what's not. A promise to a build a certain wall comes to mind.
>>
>>69729933

Democracy is shit tier.

That's why we don't do that shit anymore.
>>
>>69732432

What if the majority wants to enforce Sharia law and ban all religions aside from Islam?

Straight majority rule is rule by the mob. Constitutional constraints are important at checking democracy. It's not a perfect system, but it's worked well thus far.
>>
>>69732432
People are elected to LEAD a country and act in its people's best interest.

If the majority are agitating for an unsustainable welfare state then the leaders should make clear why it's a terrible idea, not cave in and bankrupt the country
>>
>>69733269
>thus far.
Key phrase there.

Its collapsing before your eyes already.

Meanwhile kingdoms kept monarchy going for hundreds if not thousands of years longer.
>>
>>69733152
Out of all the things Trump has said and promised building a wall on the border with Mexico is the most feasible.

Some tools can produce dust, the dust can cause cancer, that needs a prop 65 warning too.

Alcohol causes cancer, that needs a warning too.

Buildings have a blanket prop 65 warning because something in the building, even somebody smoking itside it, probably causes cancer.

See why letting a bunch of people that don't think through problems decide instead of a few representatives decide can be fucking retarded?

But the people were right. We had no reason to be in that war until Pearl Harbor. Hitler should have won.
>>
>>69733603

Are you complaining about tmblr but not the fact that she has a dick?
>>
>>69732067
Well part of FDR's 'smarter than common wisdom' was also embargoing nations along with arming others, which was why the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor and the Nazis declared war on America in the first place. It worked out pretty well for America in the end, but dragging people into wars over which foreign power controls which bit of foreign land isn't really a good example of great leadership.

"Democracy" is conflated with "liberty" in order to justify it. "Do what you want as long as you don't hurt anyone else" is liberty. "Follow the orders of the majority or else" is tyranny, and democracy. Get them straight.

Democracy is the most insidious form of tyranny because it has the support of the majority by definition. If you love democracy, you hate liberty, and are thus pure filth.
