I just got a pretty serious reprimand from the UCLA library staff for watching this video on a school computer. I explained I'm writing a paper on Walt Disney and it came up, but they didn't care. Uncle Remus is never shown as dumb. In fact, he's the most sympathetic, wise character in the movie and actually gets treated unfairly by the white mother. There's also a black kid who plays with the two white kids, and race is never brought up as an issue.
I used to love that movie as a kid. Granted, as a Brit I had no knowledge or understanding of slavery or American history. I wondered why it seemed to disappear a while back, then learned it was now considered racist. I'd argue that The Song of the South introduced 5 year old me to the first major likeable/sympathetic black character I can remember.
As an aside, there's a restaurant in Moscow I've been to that is themed like a stereotypical 50's era American Diner. On the tv screens they play various old cartoons/film clips. One of them, can't remember if it was Disney or MGM, showed a group of black men training to be soliders but kept fucking it up and dying one by one due to their own stupidity untill the last few blew themselves up by mistake iirc. The people I were with were shocked that such a cartoon ever existed, or that it STILL existed, whilst I'm struggling to hold back laughter at the cartoon.
