Harper did change Alberta quite a bit. At least socially and culturally. He flooded the province with something like 200,000 TFWs and made any sort of non-oil company or investments quite difficult.
I think a lot of the people here that support Harper didn't live here before the boom during Harpers reign. The economy did great here because of oil but the actions the government took to keep that boom growing lead to a pretty vast population shift. It doesn't really feel like the same place I grew up in anymore. Nobody here really likes the province, they only want the money it contains.

There's a lot of cities in Canada that I find way more fun than Calgary to visit, but I'd never want to live in them. Even with this 'downturn' I'm not hurting for work, I can live within walking distance of the city center at a survivable price unlike any other bit Canadian city, the cultural scene over the last decade has been making a lot of headway against the city's sterile corporate image, a lot of the urban planning mistakes made during the 70s and 80s are being recognized and the vacancies in office real estate is being seen as an opportunity to make changes. Really the only thing I actively dislike about Calgary is the fucking Stampede.
