What happened to the 90s techno-optimism? Did it just fade away with the turn of the century or did Y2k kill it? Was it the Patriot act? The war on terror?

I know people always say it was better "back in the days", but is it possible the world is indeed getting shittier every year?

In the 09s, Westerners had every reason to believe that they had reached the end of history, and the good guys had won.

Nowadays we think they must have been stupid, but think about it. The West had won battles against every type of nemesis, and had won the day using its superior culture. Everyone was chill and producing fun culture.

9/11 was a reminder that history doesn't end.

It was there through the early and mid 2000's everyone was buzzing about the singularity in the mid 2000's then smart phones came out and minorities got access to the internet.....This destroyed any illusion of a prosperous future

Wouldn't faith be restored with the switch to broadband and social media? Where are all the earth activist underground movements online? Why are the hackers no longer banning together for whatever reason? When did the Internet become only a place to argue?
>>
>>69725008
But the Internet is global, other people were a part of this idea as well. The idea that we could come together and solve our problems without "the Man"
>>
>>69725015
Oh. I would say jewgle and kikebook came around and now technology progress heads in a social direction where we can all see its heading towards less privacy and more connection instead of a fun and mysterious future we couldn't predict in the 90s. Now it's frightening not exciting.
>>
>>69725141
Are you suggesting that the power the Internet gave people didn't change that they were still shitty people?
>>
>>69725395
>But the Internet is global, other people were a part of this idea as well.
Yeah, but only Westerners and Western-aligned allies.

I remember Kiwis talking a lot of shit about America in the 90s, but honestly it was just the tyranny of small differences. Like a roommate that starts to irritate you.

We were all the same. I remember my dad taking me to see Bill Clinton on his visit to NZ. The idea was that he was the "leader of the world", and people were okay with that.

4 chan /pol/ is the only place on the internet where people have the freedom from mods to crowd source ideas and we concluded that Hitler should have won.

I agree, however we still could organize, like when flash mobs were a new phenomenon! Only we are ALL online, do what's the hold up? Lack of inspiration? Lack of desire? Absence of will?
>>
>>69725277
Social Media is the opposite of progress. In fact I would say that Web 2.0 has done far more to destroy any sort of optimism about technology than anything else.
Think about it what Web 2.0 is:
>massive, centralized systems/clouds which store information for you (information that is mined and then sold to governments/other companies without your express consent)
>uniformity is enforced on social media via mob rule and outright censorship by platform ownership

The mainstream internet is worthless.

War on Terror probably has more of an effect then we'd like to say.

Compare Gibsons Bridge Trilogy to the Blue Ant Trilogy.
>>
>>69725575
So technology as a source of optimism crumbled when the illusion of a western world fell? But we're still in a western centric world now, aren't we? Code is in English (mostly), most governments are variations of democratic-Republics. Where did it all slip away?

Right, but that's what this community is essentially about and no, this place isn't the only free island on the Web. Facebook and the like are big, but have yet to consume the net.

It wasn't like that. We had key disagreements (especially about things like nuclear power) but the idea was that America was fundamentally good, and could be persuaded. It didn't matter that they could wipe us off the map, because they never would.

After 9/11 America started to seem more like Man of Steel Superman. And I didn't even know what to make of Muslims, I'd never even had to think of them before. It was like an alien invasion.

But that isn't the whole Web. A huge part of traffic, a large portion in data, but not everything. I just can't understand why we lost faith in the most powerful force man has ever created, that spans continents and connects us all to information and communication. Why do we accept it for its casual uses? Why aren't people organizing for things they care about irl, everywhere, all the time?

In the 80s and 90s we expected much more unimpeded progress than we got but it turns out that

A) You can't predict research breakthroughs that are dependant on innovation

B) Recklessly pouring money into anything remotely tech related is very bad practice

Lately there's been a bit of a rerun of the past what with the app craze and everyone thinking that any and all advertising is profitable. But it's not really a bad thing because that's also brought back funding for things like research, for instance trying to say that you wanted to do anything with artificial intelligence was poison to a project just 12 years ago. Now its a buzzword that'll get you attention no matter what. That optimism of the old days is coming back but in a less innocent way. I think that most people realize that were headed more towards a well developed dystopia than anything but aren't really sure how to handle that. Most of the advances aren't the sort of thing they expected like flying cars or food in pill form but instead surveillance technology and automated killing machines. Its whatever though. As long as the technology exists its only a matter of time before it's adapted to do everything it's useful for.
>>
>>69726867
That's blue-sky thinking.

We are in a life-or-death war with Muslims and with our own darkness. This is WW3, it's just that we were so comfortable that we're taking decades to wake up.
>>
>>69726209
If you tell the truth anywhere else you get banned. Name one place other than /pol/ where people can bring up the fact that we stopped funding the space program after the civil rights movement in order to pay for dem programs. You would get immediately banned from just about anywhere else
>>
>>69727272

It's strange how technology is simultaneously significantly more and less advanced that we predicted. The current Internet and the advanced wafer-thin touchscreen pocket supercomputers we use to browse it seems to have been beyond the imagination of sci-fi authors.

So once the bubble burst we were only left with stronger surveillance and greater remote killing power? If more people believed we were headed to a more dystopian future why wouldn't they use the devices already in there hands to try and fight it??

the tech boom already happened and its not become the new norm and is adjusted into society its just time and ideas come before the next boom and bubble happens in the 90s it was technology 2000s it was real estate 2010s it was software and more technology who knows what the future will bring.....
>>
>>69729968
Alright.

So who cares who plays the game? Wasn't it created to be played? And how does that relate to the Internet? It's HUGE! Not just one set of rules and ideas, and it's everywhere. There are so many places, anyone could organize for what they believe in and be active in it everywhere. So normies use FB and such, so why aren't people active somewhere else and make impacts on the real world.
