Morgan Spurlock (super size me documentary guy) Did a great episode on Medical Tourism, which explains why the US has such inflated prices for medical care.
Basically everyone had really good jobs that provided health care. Since the insurance companies could negotiate and change premiums that these companies would just pay, because they were making tons of money. Suddenly everyone starts losing their jobs and prices for medical care was still inflated. Now it's a crisis.
