In 1984 the food pyramid guide recommended 6-11 servings of grain per day. Carbohydrates (which you find in grains) are basically pure sugar.

People don't give a shit about government guidance. What they care about is cost, convenience, and taste.

American sugar-foods are cheap, easy (just go to 7/11 lul), and although they do not taste good, they are addictive and invoke a pleasure response.

Sure, only real important thing is that people started eating more sugar.

But the corn industry did lobby their products. Furthemore they started making low-fat products, but they replaced fat with sugar.
The food pyramid is the most cancerous thing that happened to our nutrition.
You're right, people dont care about government guidance, but they care about "lose fat quick" shilling. And that was sponsored by the government.

I read an article, literally we sit more.

Back in the day people moved more, now 90% of work is sitting at a PC.

It's a combination of things.

Highly subsidized fattening foods, meat, dairy and corn being pumped out.

A massive campaign of advertising these foods to the public.

Increased work hours leading to less time for home cooked, generally healthier, prepared meals

Greater distances travelled to work.

Increasingly sedentary type jobs. A change from a manufacturing base to a service orientated economy.

Air conditioning and constant climate control happened. We're supposed to let our bodies sweat in the summer. We're supposed to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.

HFC (High Fructose Corn Syrup) was added to soft drinks. Now it's in nearly every processed snack food.
