High Renaissance/Baroque was the zenith of Western art. It's impossible to find a Baroque cathedral and not be blown away by it. Even the barbaric Germans had tons of wonderful Baroque buildings, like the Zwinger and Frauenkirche in Dresden. Gothic is fine, but it's not as glorious as the Baroque.

I was dumbfounded when I went to st peters. Absolutely awe struck and dumbfounded. I felt awed and as if the eye of god really was in that place. Again, not religious, but I felt awed by the fact man, with his hands and no power tools, had made that place. And as awe inspiring as it was to me that human geniuses had created such a place, so much more awe inspiring must (if!) The god be that made those men.
