SoaSE was made on minimum budget.
I still remember in 2008 when I picked up GalCiv II: GotY edition and it had a little flier inside of it advertising the launch of SoaSE.
They really should've bothered to rework the entire graphics for Rebellion, but whatever.
I find that an average SoaSE game can last in excess of 12 hours. Its one of the few titles I bother playing years on.
GalCiv 3 recently launched and its a complete spiritual successor to GalCiv 2. Stardock recently published another RTS named "Ashes of the Singularity". The game itself is a bit quirky but the soundtrack is literally one of the best I've heard from a game.
That is to say all major Stardock titles launch with brilliant soundtracks.

War Thunder is pretty good.
It's made by Russian devs so they're obviously brainwashed commieboos who push a strong pro-Russian, anti-German bias into the game, but despite that Axis players tend to be better teammates, making the game challenging but fun and rewarding when you beat down Soviet UFOs with broken physics defying flight models.

I've put off it because apparently the OR DK2's resolution/screen door effect (I know they're different, one is the size of the border between the pixels, etc., but I haven't actually used it to know which is the issue, I've just been told it is) makes it difficult to spot distant dots, either enemy fighters or AA on the ground, to make it really feasible. That and it can be quite difficult to make out some of the smaller gauges, like your fuel, but that can be solved with leaning in, I guess.
I'm pretty comfortable just using trackIR until we get a generation or two into VR, to see if it fizzles out or not.

War Thunder is literally play slavs to win: the game. Doesn't matter if it's at low tiers, where they get APHE round that acts as thermobaric warheads when they hit any part of your rank, or late tier where the enemy team can reliably pen you but they're forced to use broken APDS (which doesn't spall, only knocks out one crew at a time if you're lucky. Can't rely on ammo detonations, especially against russians, meanwhile you knock 3 of their crew out and they just one shot you) or HEAT which, laughably, still relies on penetration and so is completely useless.
Not to mention the grind gets twice as bad every single patch, a good game in RB with a talismanned jet and you still only get 5% of an engine upgrade, it takes literally weeks to spade one.

Well somehow the game world got smaller in the sequel
There was little challenge in the second, combat and leveling became so much easier
I remember spending ages trying to up skills on the first and having to retry things multiple times.
The second game can be completed in 3 hours, not even speed running it.
Co-op was fun though

Get DCS, it's a free to play game (free SU-25 and P-51 (SU-25 doesn't have a clickable cockpit and the P-51 has, but no weapons, it's a TF-51 civilian variant)), where you buy individual aircraft modules that are just plugged into the game.
It's got a Flaming Cliffs 3 module which basically includes a lot of the aircraft associated with lock on, all now with 3d cockpits and advanced flight models on the way (some of them have already been upgraded).
Dedicated F-14 and carrier module is on the way, coming this year apparently. They just released some screenshots this week that look absolutely amazing.

I have a DK2. It's really about immersion, the same with HOTAS controls. A mouse + keyboard has an advantage, even in flight sims, but a HOTAS is way more fun.
I was in the EVE Valkyrie alpha and it was incredible. Looking up and behind you to see if you have someone on your tail - there's really nothing else like it.

It's pretty fun and something you can sink a lot of hours into just learning a single aircraft.
I'd recommend just getting a cheap throwaway controller like one a TM 16000 or whatever they're called, the cheap ones with the haptic sensors, and see how you like it. I started with a cheap Saitek joystick, and loved the game so much (and hated trying to remember the keybinds for the joystick functions I couldn't bind) that I upgraded to pic related shortly after, which is also usable in other flight/space sims and is fairly popular so you can just download control schemes instead of setting them up yourself.

They actually didn't do that, theres only been a handful of things that were every REALLY OP, and most of those have been cert line type stuff. Most of the stuff you can buy with $$ is in fact a sidegrade that holds some kind of specialist niche, but isn't really better or worse. In nearly every case the defaults weapons are either the best or tied for best in their role. They made Burner tanks maxed baseline to balance against rocketpods and A2AM/Hornets. If you're a skyknight you always run with pods cus they're basically a win button in dogfighting.
Theres been a couple badly OP weapons releases, but they usually get nerfed pretty quick into a proper balance, rocketpods for example did get nerfed, but theyre still very powerful and very common.
