Whitey who lived in Japan for 2 years as a psuedo-wageslave (actual fulltime instead of nip fulltime) with slightly-better-than-conversational Japanese here. It's cool at first, but once the novelty wears off you realise you're living in a pretty impersonal society with a somewhat xenophobic population. When I was flat hunting I was actually turned down renting one because I was white, and the guy wouldn't even say anything beyond that. One of the things I found most weird was that getting shitfaced with work connections was an expected part of your life. Like, it wasn't there by choice or for fun, you pretty much had to do it to fit in. Overall It was fun, but I feel a lot more comfortable now I'm back in western society.

There are some really run down areas that just aren't publicized, I was surprised how much liter you find, for a place advertised as so clean. A significant amount of mental illness/physical ailments is ignored and not dealt with, high suicide rate and very punishing work hours for essentially not all that much.
