The reason for China to prosper during the ages and be one of the first high-population civilisations, is literally BECAUSE of the geography/topography/climate.
The yellow river valley is one of the 3-4 agricultural hotspots of antiquity, which allowed for successful and perpetual agriculture necessary to sustain big "nations".
Mexico is desert, mountain, swamp, rainforest and subsaharan climate. Impossible for big numbers, not to mention the lack of metallurgy spreading from the eurasian land mass allowing for the continuos spread of information and technology allowing for mutual improvement of technology.
