That way, a particular interest can drive progress. If a great deal of success it attained, its benefits can be diffused across borders, like medical advancements and technological improvements.
Without borders the whole world is one giant group project. And anyone who has been in a group project knows how immensely frustrating and conflict-laden they can be. So having borders is essentially telling everyone to work on their own and bring it together at the end of the day. One day we'll probably all work together as a species, but we're far from that considering we all speak different languages, have different cultures and believe in different sky-daddies.

While the borders themselves may be fabricated by humans, the power of the group that allows the border to persist is very real.
