OP, someone suggested I look into r/K psychology earlier today, so I can offer this from what I've read:
r-style evolutionary animals drift towards promiscuity, lots of children, little/no child rearing, single parents, no in-groups, little conflict, and so forth. Because within their environments there is little/no scarcity of food, so there is no real need for competition.
K-style evolutionary animals drift towards monogomy, few children with significant time spent rearing/training, multiple parents, a protective in-group, and constant competition. Because within their environments there is not enough food and someone will starve to death.
r-style doesn't really care about the capabilities of the individual, because there's no real pressure on survival due to a lack of scarcity.
K-style has to focus on child-rearing and training because being able to outcompete others is important in securing food/mates.
We can see that promiscuity isn't necessarily a bad thing. Many species make use of it successfully - it's just a different evolutionary adaptation. However, from what I know of humans, we're much further over into the K-style evolutionary adaptation than the r-style, and the promiscuous with many children approach will stretch the ability to raise and look after children, putting them worse off in any competitive environment.
Basically, if you want competent individuals in the species in order to improve survival in a resource-scarce environment, you should be looking towards monogamous relationships and child-rearing practices.
The explosion of liberalism over the past few hundred years could possibly be explained in part by the fact that humanity is largely living in a post-scarcity environment now. We may not all be able to have the most luxurious items, but we certainly have no want of food or shelter, and we are only reducing scarcity as time goes on, not increasing it.
