I didn't use the X-36 as my example even though I considered it. The Su-47 and MiG 1.44 were much closer to production ready. But something tells me that Russian command did not like something about the Su-47 (despite its agility was second only to the X-31) and the MiG 1.44 design somehow was compromised and ended up in China's hands and became the J-20.
As for the car comparison, I'll still argue that they are way different despite fulfilling largely the same tasks at the end. And they are different because of the two different routes taken to get there.

Our military is a business though. When I was in Afghanistan there were niggers from Kenya driving the little forklifts that moved our gear around on Lagman. I'd argue the Su-47 was never really intended to go into production in the exact form it flew as. Maybe if they had made 4 or 5 but with only one ever being built I'd say it was solely intended as a technology demonstrator.
I'd actually agree with you that the Mig 1.44 is a pretty good example but it's lightyears ahead of the J-20 in design since it has decades of Russian experience in aircraft design that China doesn't have.

When it comes to technical aspects of heavy transport aircraft. Wide body airliner market tells everything you need to know about it. Russians simply aren't there and market is split by Airbus and Boeing.
Western manufacturers have massive advantage in engine tech. It's pretty evident in current relatively new Russian airliners. All are offered with western engines on civilian market, only countries that get western engines buy 'em with Russian engines.
