It's been exaggerated. Vikings literally never wrote anything useful other two rune stones with our birth certificate on it.

They were alright. Not saying they were ubermensch, but they were alright. On an individual level they were renowned for fighting prowess and ferocity, but they lacked discipline and structure like most other tribal militaries. As a result they got btfo by the French, although they were able to control England for a while. Their main contribution was through trade networks tho.
