What exactly happens to these millennials who graduate college with $80k in student

Thread replies: 322

What exactly happens to these millennials who graduate college with $80k in student loans, and the best job they can land pays $11 an hour?

I mean let's assume 5% interest. That's over $300 a MONTH just to keep down INTEREST! And if your debt is that high your interest is probably higher than just 5%.

What will these people do? They can't default. They make less than two grand a month BEFORE tax. Are they effectively fucked for life? Should it be considered normal that there's a new slave class in the making?
>>
> Start working part time at 16
> Work while going to college at 18

That's all there is to it.

If you work for 2 years, you won't be at min wage during college, and have more flexibility in hours and shift preference.

Little retards who take out massive debt to be lazy and or party for four years deserve to pay the piper on graduation.
>>
>>69580219
What use I have from hiring 16 years old? What job experience 16 years old can get since he doesnt even have middle education finished yet?
>>
>>69580900
I worked washing dishes for 10/hr at 16.
It's called elbow grease and being responsible.
>>
>>69580900
A 16 year old can flip burgers, bag groceries, wash dishes, and bus tables. These are jobs perfect for that age, and pays like shit.

2 years job experience will set the kid ahead of others at nose interesting jobs at 18.
>>
Why don't these liberal colleges let the students get degrees cheaper? Why do students agree with the political views of the same people who jack up their debt? Seems dubious.
>>
>>69579550
Free univerisities feel good here.
Education is your right? of course right
>>
How do you only earn $11 after graduation unless you have a meme degree like Liberal Arts?
>>
>>69583012
>bag groceries
Never understood this. Are you americans too lazy to bag your own shit? It would never work in Sweden.
>>
>>69580900
My daughter babysits at 16. She is paid £10 per hour or £50 to sleep overnight. She earns around £150 per week. She is sensible and trustworthy. I will pick her up and drop her off whenever she finishes. If she is working the least I can do is help with transport.

We have a local 16 year lad who will sweep the drive, wash the car, clear the hedges, anything that requires a bit of hard work but not much skill. He's that busy you have to book him a couple of weeks in advance.

They both got off their backsides and decided to work instead of sponging off parents like little children. I have lots of respect for this.

It is possible to earn and have good grades.
>>
>>69579550

Don't live beyond your means. Don't go to college if it requires you to go into debt.

The whole reason college degrees are worthless is because people who are too stupid to understand basic economics keep getting them.
>>
>>69584084
Exactly. Fuck those people. You should have gotten a real degree.
>>
>>69584499
It's not bad financial decision making to get in debt to go to school, but only you plan on getting a degree that will land you a high paying job.
>>
>>69580219
Fucking this!

I started working as a grocery bagger at 16. By the time I graduated college I had good enough standing to get an internship at company HQ. Two promotions later and I'm making 52k a year. It's really not that hard if you just work and don't fuck around for 6 years before looking for work.
>>
>>69579550
they vote for Sanders
>>
>>69579550
I'm unemployed and owe about $60,000 in student loans and I graduated five years ago. I don't know what to do.
>>
I started working at 16, taking summer jobs. Then I kept doing it, saving up money so that I didnt have to use so much of the student loan that I kept taking. In norway you get almost 50% of the student loan removed when you pass the exams, so I have a lot of money actually saved up, and little to no debt.

JUST KIDDING. I have been playing games and not giving a fuck each summer. I have perhaps 80k dollaroos in debt and in some months I will have a job that will let me pay all that down in less than two years. lmao
>>
>>69584206
it speeds up the process requiring less wait in line and less lines to be open. Also if some one is old or handicapped it doesn't create a bottle neck. cuck
>>

Yes but more and more businesses are hiring older fuck ups to do menial jobs. The era of the 16 year old employee is over.

if you aren't persistent and for some reason believe you are worth something without proving it

When I had no experience and was living out of my parents house I was sending out at least ten resumes a day to anything and everything I could find. Craigslist was my bitch. Got a random job answering phones at a swim school for 9 bucks, 2 months later I was making 13 bucks teaching kids because I swam competitively all my life, 6 months later I was making 15. Shit sucks when you can't find a job, but that's the system keep working it.

Our grocery stores are very different from European stores. The supermarkets here are usually serving 100 customers at a time. So there are like 5-7 registers open. We need them here to keep the lines down, sometimes the lines are 4-5 people deep. Like the other Anon said, if an old woman got in there, it would fuck everything up.

We also don't even get the choice, the bags are on the other side of the counter, and we don't even really have a choice either way

Pic related, this is a Costco, they're fucking massive an have hundreds of customers shopping at any given time

I'm guessing you're either sitting at home like a child or up to your eyes in debt fucking around at college or university?

In the USA, external forces (i.e. the government) has pretty much made the trades and trade schools become taboo, and try to push the college degree. I have my suspicions that it's due to how overwhelmingly one-sided teachers vote, and the continued deviant lovemaking between government and education has done nothing by raise the cost of education to stupid levels without any notable rise in other factors.

How the fuck do people get into this kind of debt without trying? Do they even attempt to find scholarships and apply for financial aid or do they just fuck around and waste money? I'm about to graduate with $0 in debt and I find it amazing how they fuck up so badly. I didn't work while going to school, I just applied for financial aid and commuted an hour and a half so I wouldn't have to live on campus for an extra 4-8k+.
>>
Hell if I know. I live in Georgia where the HOPE scholarship that everyone can get pays for everything if you get a good enough SAT and maintain a 3.8. Hell even if you just keep a 3.0 it pays for about half of what a community college costs.

And it's all paid for through the lottery with not a single dollar coming from taxes. Add up all the other scholarships that are avaible I get paid to go to undergrad.

I love threads like these because the Americans try to justify why they aren't getting cucked by their government, and that the Nordic system is broken.

I'm originally from Denmark. I get free university, and I get a stipend just for attending. Sounds better they becoming a child-worker in an attempt to avoid being enslaved by debt for 20 years.

But... but... the internet said more taxes = bad :(

>>
I looked through the entire thread and did not see a single response for how to actually solve the problem of crushing student loan debt. Only victim blaming and shitheaded arguments about not going into debt into the first place. Never change, /pol/.

OP, the simple answer is that those student loans aren't getting paid back. Ever. Shit's gone.

A possible way to forgive this debt is to require that students pay back a minimum amount of their debt required to keep lending institutions functioning. The repayment period would be something like 10-15 years, but not an unreasonable length. Another way to deal with this debt is through bankruptcy, where your credit is fucked for 10 years but at least you can live and contribute to the economy.

One thing that MUST change is hiring practices in the US. Businesses should be given incentives to hire native people and discouraged for outsourcing their workforce.

Why should people that manage to be successful have to pay for the fuckups that aren't?
Moreover, every time the U.S. Government increases the amount of money in grants, tuition rises. What would make you think they'd suddenly become honest when given a blank check?
Further still, a lot of time in said colleges are spent teaching shit that people should've learned in high school, wouldn't it be more prudent to reform our K-12 system?

Finally

I think that was the real motivation for cutting the banks out of the student loan game. The Feds realized there would be a default crises, and didn't want to have the optics of bailing them out again. Of course, they keep all they made before they changed things in the ACA.

Everyone going:

>hurrr, they got a liberal arts degree, I will be fine

The government nationalized student loans, taking away what banks used to do, but also charge almost no interest
>>
>>69589719

Not really. They aren't grouped into bonds like mortgages, and one of the things slipped into Obamacare cut banks out of the federal lending side of things (most of the student lending) so you can't even short them.

I suppose you could short the dollar, because if the U.S. govt realizes massive losses on student loans it might need to start borrowing more/printing more.

I bet the banks will eventually make synthetic products to bet on student loans though. It only makes sense. Then we can end up with $3 trillion more debt!

The college meme needs to die. It's disgusting.

You're funneled into it straight out of highschool, every single person in your life basically assumes you'll go and if you don't you're looked down on. "Just take out a loan, it's what everyone else does!"

You could work in trades (electricians, plumbers etc get a shitload of money) you could self educate and enter the tech sector, you could start your own business, etc. There are so many options. Granted trying to work your way up from minimum wage is also a meme, people don't promote up from within anymore they just hire memers from outside the company and then force you to train your boss.
>>
Your average college student is a meme. When their loan checks come in, what do they do? Buy ipads, new computers, steak dinners. What? Are you a unionized gibmedat? Normal unskilled labour jobs don't start handing out raises just because you've been there for 2 years.

If you're the best person there, they'll ask you to train all the new people they hire so they're close to being as good as you are. If you fail, then you deserve your minimum wage. If you succeed, they have an infinite supply of people as good as you, so you're expendable.

No it isn't, A strong middle class is able to decide the country's ideology as it is less reliant on self-interest. That is why the decay of American politics coincides with the decay of its middle class, where politics simply becomes the have nots and the haves
>>
>>69594849
If you went to top private school and you couldn't get a job you deserved you retard.
>>
I went to a fairly expensive private school. I ended up with a huge debt and high loan payments. When I first got out of school I took a shit job making min wage. I also continued to work a night job I had had during the summers while in college.

I worked my way up to supervisor at both jobs, and saved every penny I could by being cheap as fuck (no kids, shitty used car). I'm 27 now and have a real job that I make decent money at. I pay my loans back ($600-700 per month), pay for an apartment, cable, internet, cell phone, insurance, etc and still save money every month. I make about $19/hour now.

People who rack up THAT much student loan debt (by choice... community college and state schools are extremely affordable) and then complain about not being able to pay it back are lazy and/or wasteful.

1. If you think the middle class is not voting in their own self-interest, you're an absolute moron or one hell of an optimist.
2. Even our riots now are nothing compared to historic political crises in this country. Even at times when our Middle Class was flourishing.
3.Politics has ALWAYS been between the have nots and haves, even the founding fathers of the U.S. were all "haves". Any governmental system is inherently oligarchic.

Financial crisis, and then the U.S. Government "gives" money to the debtors (printed en masse by the fed)
Then comes inflation, recession(more likely depression), unemployment, riots, and if we're lucky, entire governmental collapse.
Though that's assuming the U.S. Government doesn't default on their loans before the bubble bursts, so that's an optimistic outlook.

It's a much worse scenario if they default before student loans collapse.

This is what happens when you get government involved in the economy. Wherever they try to help, they just make shit worse.

Proof: My dad worked part time when he went to college, and graduated with under 3k of debt. He graduated in the mid 80's, when minimum wage was $3.35/hr, which is only worth about $6.50-7.00/hr in today's money. So let's double all the figures, for simplicity. Would you have a problem with under 6k of debt making $6.70/hr?

Get the government out of the college loans program, and allow kids to declare bankruptcy.

Working before college in no way guarantees you will make more than minimum wage during college - shit, even having a college degree doesn't guarantee you'll make more than minimum wage. You can't pay off US college tuition by washing dishes anymore.

In all honesty, if you have 80k debt in student loans, you fucked up somewhere or were a genuine with your money.

You shouldn't board in college

You should have a part time job while you attend college

And if you have to, take a reduced coarse load to save money.

It's one thing to go to school, it's another to go in the dumbest possible manner and millennials seem to do the dumbest things when they approach how to go to college.

Can confirm this. Working my ass off, getting my Master's in Physics, invested myself dearly in my education, held leadership positions, internships, the works. The whole time I was spun a magical lie about instant employment out of school. I started job hunting 8 months ago, but still I'm striking out. My standards have fallen on both pay and quality of work--I just want anything. If I can't get it in the next few weeks, I have a shitty, underpaying position here at the university that will stave off the student loans as long as the minuscule grant holds out. Really don't want to do the Ph.D., but I guess I'm fucked if I don't.

Even if you get reduced in state tuition rates, you're lucky to pay 15k a year for college. That's already 60k for a four year education, and there are plenty of expenses that go along with that. Not to mention, you have no choice but to pay for room and board unless there's a good college near you and you can live at your parent's house for free. What if the best school for your field of study is in another city, and you have no choice but to live at school? Millenials are doing the exact same shit people have always done when attending college, but the cost of college has gone up exponentially and become unaffordable for most people.

If you want a bit of my wisdom. Go to grad school for engineering.

Personally, I hate engineers. They're often incompetent, don't know how shit works, and they rely on physicists' leg work for everything, but they're what gets employed.

I've lost out almost every job I've applied for just because people in HR don't even know what a fucking physicist is, but they see "engineer" and give it an instant pass.

Not to mention that they slap the word "engineer" on every job now. From research and development to "customer relations engineer". It doesn't have to make sense.

I had a friend I did research with as an undergrad, and he switched to aerospace engineering in grad school. Right now he's entertaining offers from NASA and Boeing.

Just my thoughts if you're looking into grad work.
>>
>>69601512
What are my chances of getting into a legit grad program if I've been out of uni for like 3 years?

>>69601727

>>
>>69601689
Grad programs are competitive as hell, so chances aren't great, and most good ones at least want you to take the subject specific one.

What I recommend is going to a State University for a year or two in their grad program. Work your ass off in a lab, get published, apply somewhere better. Friend of mine upgraded to a nice private school that way.

>This is absolute garbage, the middle class is always squabbling over who gets what slice of the pie. It's been this way since the New Deal.
Yes and the economy usually benefits the middle class which keeps the poor and rich in line

>1968 Chicago riots, The ENTIRE Civil Rights Movement, Black Nationalism, The Vietnam War, the list goes on.
Those events had nothing to do with how political institutions functions

>And those are taking a back seat to immigration and the economy in this election. Which have clear class divides. Further, the discussion on abortion and gun rights follows closely with class.
Not so much as taking back seat but as one side is losing the argument. Immigration runs through ideological divide. Abortion and gun rights runs through racial divides than anything else. Global warming, gmo food, NSA etc etc. Economy is just a small fragment on what is being discussed

Let's assume some feminist got a women's studies major with a minor in cuck art, who went to a for profit college and spent $100,000

She would have to restructure the loan, if it's 8% interest then she would have to talk to the bank, call them sexist and get lower payments.

If she can't, then defaults on the loan, and they can take it out of your tax returns, they can take it from your wages directly, they can sue you, they can even cut your welfare

110k debt here

I am a wage slave. They have effectively turned me into a braindead machine. I go to work and do physical labor to make enough to pay my debt. And the security? My parents cosigned the loan because they wanted me to go to college.

So if I decide to say FUCK THIS. Guess who gets the bill?

>There's your problem. Employers don't want retards from bumfuck state university.

Most employers don't give a fuck unless you are applying to a top tier company right out of school and were at the top of your class, and even then your expensive degree is pretty much leaving you to be a bitch for your first few years there. Most companies would rather take someone with a 4.0 from bumfuck state than someone who graduated middle of their class from Harvard, and it is alot cheaper and easier to be a big fish in a small pond at bumfuck state. I make $40/hour so I guess I'm not doing as shitty as most people, but my student loans (bachelor's + Masters because just a bachelor's didn't really lead to better wages) are in excess of $80 grand and is probably gonna take the majority of my working years to pay off

Otherwise you can network anywhere else and be fine.

I'm a current dental student. Here's the thing about it: as a dentist you will have a job. Our unemployment rate is less than 1% and that's for people actually working as dentists. If you put your nose to the grind stone and work at your clinical skills you will make enough money to pay off your debts and live comfortably, something most people with just undergraduate degrees will never be able to do. Even if you have a failed business venture, declare bankruptcy, and ruin your credit you will still be able to find another 6 figure job if you are willing to move or commute.

Moreover, when you have that amount of steady income you can make investments and take out business loans since there is a high probability of paying it off. I have some buddies who buy small practices and flip them. One of them bought a practice for 200k, they take home about 100k each year and they spent about 5 years building the practice up. He sold it for 1.7 million by the end and now he's starting up on another one.

I know I'm shilling hard for dentistry, but the general point is that loans aren't some evil tool. They are a great tool to get rich, but you have to calculate the risk and be smart about it.
>>
Why don't more people join the military? I really don't understand. Want free college or tuition assistance serve for 4 years. You don't even have to be in a combat role join the navy, air force or national guard.

So basically, if you try eduction as a means to escape the poverty you were born into, even if we're talking about a STEM degree, it's pointless because unless you're working 35hrs/wk with your 16 credit hour workload, you're fucked due to insurmountable debt.

It's a catch 22. You lose for not going to college, but by going to college you end up making just about nothing anyway because of the debt you need to pay off.

It's a scam. An entire generation, thrown away.
