My parents actually lived through it and they still way it was the best time of their lives. It could be the nostalgia talking, but it actually does sound like it functioned well, and not resorting to borderline genocide like Cambodia or the USSR is always a plus.
The inherent problem with countries like this (and dictatorships in general) is that the strongman has to tower above everyone else, so he can't groom an heir to take up the reins after he kicks the bucket, which leads to infighting like what happened here.

I think Yugoslavia demonstrated why the USA was necessary as the first country where all whites were treated equally. The old European rivalries are too deeply tied to blood and land to allow for true unification of even a set of small countries.

You could have gotten it cheaper, and you could have messed with the exchange rates in the 80s by taking a loan, building a house, and paying it back later with two packs of cigarettes. Well, we did some things the right; we had a nuclear power plant for christs sake. The spark was right, the people prooved that they were able to work together. The sience was good, military kicked ass…sorta. Beautiful lands, good climates, no mayor catastrophes. We just had to fucking make the lemode...
