i read that the steel they uses for their blades are folded so often because it is of low quality and otherwise unusable. also they where pretty easy to break

Their swords were built to be relatively lightweight and maneuverable in combat.
tradeoff for that is they're much easier to break with even relatively small chips being easy to severely damage em and they're more designed for cutting and slicing at enemies than say cleaving and lopping off parts with broadswords.
The folding of the metal in the blades is pretty much to make em as durable as possible
