It's not true in our case.
We were settlers creating a British Colony.
We were created by and organized by the British, who peopled the country with their own stock.
In some cases when there were not enough British, they recruited other Europeans… Ie the British felt Ukrainians would make good settlers in the prairies because they were agricultural people accustomed to cold climate…
but it was alway a British project, primarily for people from the UK.
Nobody ever imagined that it was some wide open space anybody would be able to come to.

Samuel Huntington argued that the first people here were not immigrants but settlers...true for just about everyone until he frontier closed around 1870. Settlers created a distinct nation, not just whatever came about from a bunch of immigrants who happened to land in the same spot.
