Other countries will have more and more automation too, but still will have a higher worker to retiree ratio and less public expenses. That could cause Japan to experience a lot of emigration, capital flight, etc...
They're not having children because the whole thing is problematic. You have to go through the whole dating process (which comes w/ it's own norms, unlike other cultures), when you get married and the woman gets pregnant, she becomes a housewife but you can't afford a proper place with only 1 salary unless you really got it good.
Having children ends up in the hands of people with more money and other people end up with hookup culture or live life alone (happens to both men and women actually).

The cost of living in Japan right now is ridiculous.
There's a lot of good things about Japan (I used to live there) but their work culture is fucked.
For one thing, any job worth a damn is one of the cities; where they expect you to work incredibly grueling hours and basically be on call almost 24/7.
The other issue is that the cost of living in these cities now is SO inflated, that almost no one can afford to live there unless they are willing to live in a one room closet and work pretty much until death.
If you don't live in the city, then you are going to be taking the fucking train too and from work every fucking day; and sometimes people live as far as THREE HOURS out to get to work. This either means you are literally sleeping on the trains, or you are staying in hotels. If you have a family, that is fucked. It's not unusual for Japanese business men to not see their family for months, sometimes years.
I knew one guy, and he legit hadn't seen his father since starting High School in Osaka.
The psychological tole it takes on people is astounding, and you basically have people that either NEED to shut themselves down emotionally completely and become essentially a drone, or you just have a complete nervous meltdown (this shit happens so much in Japan, it's considered normal).
Don't even get me started on the socio economical relationship you are expected to have with your co-workers either.
I love Japan, I really do, but their work culture is fucking awful.

The underlings don't question the elders, and because of the lack of innovation, there's no social mobility or flexibility at all. How do they overcome these limitations to still succeed as a global superpower?

Unless they fundamentally address the social stigmas surrounding their corporate work culture and attack the fundamental tenets of east-asian social civility, they will never break out of this cycle. The government has passed laws limiting work hours and has set up the infrastructure for people to report workplace abuse, but due to the entire system being a literal patriarchal society, abuse is just whitewashed and hidden in different ways.
Japan may literally never break out of this cycle unless there's some sort of cultural revolution that says 'fuck it all'. This might come from extensive investment in startups (fat fucking chances, the government refuses to innovate), or from foreigners.
