Welp, it looks like Trump finally did it this time. There is no way people can look past Trump wanting to abandon our allies to a mad man.

The front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination stunned two of America's strongest allies with the suggestion that the U.S. military would be withdrawn from their shores, with nuclear weapons replacing them.
There are currently 54,000 U.S. troops stationed in Japan and 28,500 in South Korea.
"Japan is better if it protects itself against this maniac of North Korea," Trump told CNN's Anderson Cooper Tuesday. "We are better off frankly if South Korea is going to start protecting itself ... they have to protect themselves or they have to pay us."
So high was the level of concern, Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe felt the need to respond publicly, saying, "whoever will become the next president of the United States, the Japan-U.S. alliance is the cornerstone of Japan's diplomacy.""

South Korea has over 600,000 troops, thousands of tanks and aircraft, Japan has 250,000 active duty troops in its defense force, thousands of aircraft, and could have a blue water Navy. Australia is more than capable of building and launching enough nukes to destroy the Unites States as a state and causing mass death and suffering. It wouldn't just be one or two cities.
The variable cost of nukes is relatively cheap, and nuclear missile submarines are literally impossible to defend against. They just roam around the oceans, totally invisible, waiting for the orders.
The US has a very good reason to care about nuclear proliferation. One day the US may need to use force on Australia, and it wants to be able to do that as easily as possible. Keeping Australia non-nuclear keeps US options open for the future.

For that you would need to go through a war of conquest,meaning utter and complete destruction of the enemy. Something that most of the US population would be against. You would need a draft to not only have a large pool of fresh recruits,reserves,but a complete mobilization of the country. For that you'd need a casus belli, that would compel the US population to utterly destroy and conquer a neighbor , that is the largest US trading partner. It's not feasible in the future,unless Mexico is planning on acquiring WMD, all the Catholics decide lol no we're ISIS/Al Qaeda now. If the USA were to do that without provocation it would lose a lot of its moral standing in the world, and make it unsafe for Americans traveling abroad at the sheer amount of ill will this would cause.

Not to mention a war of insurgency that the US has been proven time and time again asymmetrical warfare is not its strong suite . Even the Pentagon has said a hostile population in a non cooperative state will drain an invading army dry, if it's not put through such hardships and disruption and the threat of being wiped off the Earth that they would let the invading army have their way.
