I think there is a legitimate side to trying to limit nuclear proliferation but you are right that being in the nuclear club does conveys privileges that having the ability to build nuclear weapon doesn't.
In this case I don't think the US would actually do very much to stop Australia from acquiring weapons if they did so discretely because of the de facto status and because it's a natural response to Chinese expansionism in a world where the US might not be able to meet it's international military obligations if more than one wide scale conflict broke out.

I don't think the US would take any concrete steps to prevent Australia getting nuclear weapons, but I think the relationship between Australia and the US would become far more distant. Things like being left out of trade deals (TPP for example) could happen. Just a general cooling of the closeness.
