I would be less averse to helping somebody whose sign said "I fucked up at choosing a major, was irresponsible with relationships, and now I have no job, a son, and have to rely on gibsmedat to survive. I want a second chance and I'm willing to work hard to earn it."

No the fuck it doesn't. It should've made better life choices. The job market, like any other market, is run on supply and demand. If employers aren't looking for your skills, then they won't hire you it really is that fucking simple. A college degree has never (and will never) guarantee employment, nor was it ever meant to.

In fairness, guidance counselors have been fucking up pretty hard at giving this sort of advice, and it is kind of bullshit that you're expected to make those sorts of decisions as an 18 year old. You don't know shit when you're 18.

I think you're right to take issue with this idea that a degree guarantees you a job. You're not guaranteed anything in this life, and just because you didn't get exactly what you wanted doesn't mean somebody actively fucked you over.
