Most "rednecks" I know are simply farmers that know a good amount of stuff, just not formerly educated in a way. I live in rural NC too, and I'm from here so it's not like I'm a yankee transplant looking down on these people.
99% of them have practical knowledge and will actually surprise you by what interests them enough to talk to you about it. They're very good to have around if something breaks down as well, as most have a lot of experience fixing cars/trucks/general vehicles and their willingness to help is great. Of course, if they help you you should help then, but I've never ever been called in for a favour. They'll also help you repair stuff on your property or farm or whatever, and will really just help you whenever. I don't have a car, and whenever anyone that even barely knows me sees me walking somewhere they'll ask if I need a ride to where I'm going. Doesn't matter if it's out of their way either, as I've told them where I was going and they said hop in.
It's not fine wine or skyscrapers at all that make whites, I think. It's our ability to help others and do good by our communities.
