Outside of the social media wars, Trump and Cruz still have a lot of commonality to their voters in 1st and 2nd choice. Granted, Cruz may not retain the cross-over Dems that Trump attracted, but a good deal of independents will back him over Hillary and he more than makes up for that in retention of general election republican leaning voter (Cruz excels in this category), multiplied by enthusiasm of the conservative wing.
