It depends on what type of machinist you are.

If you are a machine operator, you will be paid slightly more than a McJob will pay you because all you do is put things in a machine and press a button or two.

If you are a machinist programmer though, and can use auto-cad, and know trigonometry and calculus along with basic geometry formulas, you can make a very sustainable wage, and they are in demand right now.

Sounds about right, went to "college" (not the same as US college but less then university. I guess it would be considered community college) learned a bit about mastercam, most of the programming for CNC is apparently standardized though the programs that program the machine differ.

Dropped out though even at the technologist level its pretty hard. The older manual lathes and mills take real skills to hone and although from a theory stand point you can understand whats going on when it comes to application you need an immense amount of study to even know what you need to do. You really need to grow up around that sort of environment to get it click in your head.

I'm not talking about factory workers, I'm talking about construction workers, carpenters, painters, etc.

In Norway, people generally go down one of two paths. If you do well in middle school, you move on to high school and eventually college and get a proper education. People who only complete high school but don't pursue higher education, usually end up in the service industry.

If you do poorly in middle school, you go to a high school that teaches you a trade, similar to a vocational school. The first year is the same as a regular high school, in the second year you start to learn a trade, and in the third year you start to work as an apprentice. This serves as both a GED and teaches you a trade, and if you work for another year after graduating, you're eligible to take the journeyman exam, which gets you a certificate of completed apprenticeship. At this point, you're considered fully qualified in whatever field you chose to pursue.

All of my working class friends ended up as carpenters, construction workers, painters, plumbers, etc, and all make a decent living.

>>
>>69511624
No, a machine operator is a specific position. Typically it's someone with no education or apprenticeship who has very little responsibility. They are generally there to put blanks into the machine that someone else (a setup machinist generally) has programmed and proved, runs the program, pulls the finished part and repeats.

A machinist (or journeyman machinist) has usually completed a technical program or apprenticeship and is capable of running various machines to make parts from a print with little or no supervision, either manually or by writing the code for a CNC machine.

Many shops will also have dedicated programmers who use computer software (CAD/CAM) to post code out to machines so the operators/machinists on the floor don't have to program at the machine, which is tedious and prone to errors.

Its not just that. Its easy to say: I have this part I need to design. But HOW do you design. When you actual draw up the design you have to imagine what it looks like from a solid block of material. Then you have to dimension it according to how important the relationship between two features is. How the part will fit into the assembly, how the tolerance stacks up or how said part is going to be machined.

To me understand the relationship between the design phase and the tools used to make the part always bugged me. I would always second guess as to whether I was designing correctly cause I had a limited understanding of what the machinist needed to know. The profs would give us anecdotes about university students coming down to the shop for practical lessons and how they would have some stupid shit designs simply because Uni students spent too much time in theory and less practice.

I found it all very vague in the beginning, if it wasn't for the fact I had to work part time I could've figured it out through more studying. Its not something that you can invest half way with.

1. Other countries became competitive in the 60s and 70s.

2. American industries were extremely slow to adapt to the market and thus fell behind.

3. There is an unhealthy relationship between ownership and labor which makes it prone to a see saw effect. Unions became too powerful around the same time competition was increasing which did not help their industries compete at the time, but then they were demonized, laws were passed to undermine them, and now you have terrible collective bargaining for laborers which drives wages and benefits down.

4. Improvements in technology rendered a lot of jobs obsolete.

5. Globalization.

The Federal Reserve (national bank) was created 100 years ago
They print money to finance whatever the government wants to do, as long as they keep raising the debt ceiling. There is less currency now than debt, so we can never pay it off.

The year after The Fed was created, they began the income tax, which goes to paying the interest on our debt.

There is your answer. It's always instructive to look at what % of a year salary things were 100 years ago compared to today. Everything down to a pack of gum.

>What changed?
The good old post WWII days ended.
You had to compete with Asia, and you couldn't in those sectors that used to feed the working class i.e. manufacturing.
Everything that could be outsourced has been outsourced, and now for some other sectors your companies are literally importing the workers from overseas, to pretty much the same effect.

>They print money to finance whatever the government wants to do, as long as they keep raising the debt ceiling. There is less currency now than debt, so we can never pay it off.
how much longer can this cycle possibly go on? doesn't sound sustainable to me, sounds like the dollar might as well be monopoly money.

>>69512754
lol, in Italy the income tax on average is 46%, often it can get up to 70%.
>>
>>69519868

it is monopoly money. but the world needs that monopoly money to buy oil with.

so we shall go on for awhile. once the oil runs out in the middle east they'll regress to muhammed times in under a generation

your thoughts are not coherent m8.
>the first country to utilize the women in their workforce would have a huge advantage.
yeah because in part by the fact that it would drive down wages.

Its the new globalism meme, only a few decades old. have a policy that fucks over the middle class and lower class of people then claim its good for the country because a few fatcats will benefit. The future you chose.

Nixon and Reagan committed treason, and everyone with money saw they could get away with it too.

Trickle Dicks don't even begin to water the country's lawn.

40 hours a week is plenty to support a family in relative luxury. People are just retarded with money and make bad life decisions. Don't blame the system for your own failures.

Hahahahahahaha stupid nigger if minimum wage kept up with its levels of the 1960s and the inflation since that time, it would be $26/hour right now

Ah Ha... somebody got it
>>

1. Employee production is the highest ever, yet pay is the lowest ever given inflation adjustment. We're living in a time where the working and upper classes are more separated than ever.

3. It's hard to go to college and get a "better job" when you're working 40 hours a week. If you do manage to take just one class at community college that costs $400 per-semester, you're not going to be leaving McDonald's for a higher-paying job anytime soon! It's going to take you forever!

Isn't min wage 7 dollars and half?
How can you not survive on (7.5*80)= 600 dollars a week?
>>
>>69513202

Not saying it's a bad thing, but it is a factor to take into account

I accidentally made only two points, but I'll make another claim.

2. Greed. The desire for more. The idea that, even though 2 men of the same age work the same hours, contribute to the best of their ability, and come home tired and stressed, one is seen as lesser-than based on their social status and job prestige.

We've only got so long here on Earth, and we all end up in the same wooden box after a few decades. If we could all work towards equality somehow, we could possibly be working towards an age where general happiness and prosperity, and love for the fellow man.

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion are now in full effect. First set down in 1895 at the World Zionist Conference in Basel. They take time to work, and time they have. Give those a read.
