Pretty much this. In the fallout of WW2 America got a lot of breathing room, allowing them to have a 4% annual growth rate. Normal annual growth through out history has been ~0.5%. America is losing their shit atm because they are returning to a normal growth rate.
Depending on corporatism and other factors like say space mining we could see a power shift in the next couple decades. The current way it's going America will begin to fall behind due to population issues, debt and aged infrastructure.

40 years ago America was almost 90% white. Other countries have been rapidly gaining on America in the last 40 years. Test scores in education have fallen off a cliff in the last decades with no bottom in sight; education represents the future capabilities of the population. America is still running off fumes from decades ago but it's now sputtering out. Give it a few more decades and America won't be able to maintain itself as the military superpower and won't be able to maintain the welfare state.
