I had pretty bad aspergers in school so my reaction from bullying would normally be to just scream and cry and get laughed at even more. I wasn't really aware of my own behaviour back then and wasn't capable of it so bullying never did me any good, and this complete social outcasting really stunted my social development in school.
If I could murder the people that bullied me and get away with it, I would. That's how much it scarred me.

I never let bullies step over me in school. In HS I got into several fights and even tho I got hit the most everytime eventually they stopped messing with me. Later I realized than in the street you can get fucking murdered for acting tough so I learned to lower my head when the odds are against me.
That being said, not everyone has the self esteem to defend demselves. Bullying can make life hell for a confused teenager.

I'd say a good deal of the 'I was bullied but I grew a spine' people simply just grew up. Adults/older teenagers are more emotionally stable than kids/young teenagers, so their less effected by bullying.
