Crows are crazy smart. Once watched a pair of them take on a large group of robins. They were after an injured robin that was on the ground. They were defending the injured bird with all they had. They left and came back with a plan, the smaller crow ran interference and drew away most of the flock while the larger crow swooped in, picked up the robin and flew away with it with only the matriarch I assume giving chase. The crow then dropped the robin from about 25 feel onto my hard asphalt drive way killing it. The smaller crow buzzed off the matriarch and then they picked the dead bird back up and left with their breakfast. Was amazing to watch.

Rather than eat a single piece of bread, crows have been observed using the bread to catch fish.
To understand that they can either have a small prize, or use that prize to obtain something better in the future requires complex thought processes.
Human children don't learn this until around the age of four and its clear that some people never truly understand this concept.

The thing is that advanced problem solving skills often pop up in species that routinely have to deal with scarcity (in the case of whites and crows; winter that turns the whole country into a desolate wasteland), since this selects for long term thinking.
Africa doesn't really know scarcity beyond the sense that you cannot support millions of people on hunting/gathering and exporting almost all your agriculture as luxury goods.
